For those of us who find the Spiked Chain just a little too cheesy, LGCS 597 opens up Long Axe as an option.

If you are proficient with the Long Axe you can use it as a reach weapon any time you use the Power Attack feat to shift 3 or more points of your attack bonus ... You must wield the Long Axe as either a normal or reach weapon until the beginning of your next turn. You cannot wield it as both a normal and a reach weapon in the same turn.Question: can you use the Long Axe to make an AOO against a closing foe - i.e. can you declare an power attack and then make an AOO? Can you declare Power Attack & Reach to be the default mode even if you are not currently engaged?

It would be great if there was a definitive ruling to print out and avoid table variation.

Is there anything else I a missing - it looks like Long Axe is a less flexible (i.e. less cheesy) version of the Spiked Chain. Are there any other practical differences?

No. Power attack can only be declared on your turn (and requires an Attack to "turn on").

So Long Axe is much less practical than Spiked Chain...

I guess I will have to go with Glaive and Short Haft.

It can indeed only be declared on your turn.
There is however no requirement that you attack to "turn on".

[I]Most GMs will allow someone to declare a 'default power attack level' which they then use ifthey don't say otherwise and have on allthe time.

Since there is no requirement to attack to "turn it on", a character could perfectly well declare their PA every 6 seconds whether in combat or not.

EDIT: Longaxes are still nothing like as good as spiked chains.

Right - but the everyone and their dog has a Spiked Chain. Too cheesy.

What do you think about Short Haft?

I don't find Short Haft to be all that good, really.

Spiked armor is better, can be made of special metals or enchanted if you wish, and does not cost a feat. Fills much the same role as attacking or AoOing with Short Haft.

As someone that is actually using a fighter specializing in the Glaive, I intend to take Short Haft.

My reason for this, is then I can focus my money on enchanting my Glaive, (I've named it Pointy)
