This is problematic in LG for the same reason experience penalties created a problem. It tends to skew the intended balance of wealth and character level. But the DMG offers an alternative, setting an xp to gp cost ratio of 1 to 5. This would correspond to a cost equal to 20% of the normal purchase value of the item. If you charge 70% of purchase value for Magic Item creation, the creator has paid for the normal cost of the materials and the cost of the XP, but out of their gold value. This should have less impact on the balance of wealth and character level, and is in keeping with other changes in the draft. It also has the advantage of eliminating the possibility of exploiting magic item creation by selling and recreating the same item repeatedly in order to slow experience growth. Anyway, its just an idea. |
