| Swiftbrook12-16-07, 10:09 PM | I'm new to magic item creation. I am considering taking Craft Armor & Weapons as my Rangers 12th level feat. One item I would like to create has the consecrate spell. Is there any way that I can: 1) cast it myself with no Cleric levels? 2) have an NPC cast it for me with no campaign docs (like a region that it is on the NPC spell cost list) 3) have a player at the table cast it for me? It's only a 2nd level spell and 2nd level spells typically only cost 60 gp. (yes I need it cast multiple times, but if I can get it once, I figure I can get it multiple times. Thanks from an MIC rookie. -Swiftbrook Just My Thoughts |

If you're all ranger, the UMD will also be useful for summon monster I in order to craft bane arrows as well. David |
| Swiftbrook12-27-07, 06:59 PM | Update: I play Saturday and will make 12th level. I don't see myself making 14th level before the campaign ends. Actually, with the ammount I play, I'll play the finalli at 13th and I'll earn about 39,000 gp between now and then. I'm looking at taking the crafting feat above all other feats I could choose so that I can craft: Hunting onto my bow (have access) saving 7,000 Celestial Armor saving 12,000 but requiring 13th level to be Druid or some class with Fly/Swift Fly Current bow is +1 Composite (+3 Str) Sacred, Frost adding Hunting is a 14,000 upgrade without crafting. If I sell the old, a new bow would be: Elven Craft +3 Str Composite +1 Magic Holy (no crafting cost break ... can't add this myself) Hunting (upgrade) Sacred (upgrade) Cost 33,700 Selling current bow at 9,350 Total Cost, 24,350 Anyone else take Craft Magical Armor and Arms and find it worthwhile? Is it worth it for me with really only two levels to use it? Thoughts? Alternate ideas? I'm a flat out Undead destroyer. +9 favored enemy undead (elven ranger sub level) +4 Str & magic Sacred bow (+1d6) Truedeath Crystal (+2d6) 5 undead bane arrows (+2d6+2) Rapidshot ==> 4 arrows per round (each with the bonuses above) unless hasted. I'm rambling. Thanks for your thoughts. -Swiftbrook |
| MwaO12-27-07, 07:42 PM | I think it depends on what you plan to spend the rest of your money on. You might consider CWI to save money on that. As an example, the archer in our group bought a lesser rod of extend spell and will eventually get 2 Pearl 2s instead of Boots of Speed. He'll just cast Swift haste instead. |

How does that work exactly? He'd have to wield the rod to activate the swift haste, leaving him at least one hand short to operate a bow. Sure, he could drop the rod, but the spell would only last two rounds if it is extended and most combats go for longer than that. Calling back a spell with a pearl is a standard action, and therefore useless for an archer in combat, the spell he recalls wouldn't be the extended version either, so he gets only three extended swift hastes a day, two of which have to be pearled back (6 rounds/day). It also takes up swift actions as opposed to the free action that activates the boots of speed (12 rounds/day) Is that really worth saving 2,000gp for a more complex, weaker and shorter effect? (ie: purchased rod + 2 crafted pearls = 4k - crafted boots =6k) Just a thought. Joe |

Swift Haste now lasts 1d4 rounds in Spell Compendium - extended, 75% of the time, it will last at least 4 rounds. Tie a rope around a Rod to your belt, hold it in one hand and the bow in the other. Cast the spell, drop the rod, and start shooting. Rangers also don't get Haste as a spell known, so 2 Pearl 2s + Rod = 7K vs 12K. Even bought straight out, it is still a nice bargain with the empty boot slot. |

I forgot about the updated duration admittedly, but it basically comes down to whether you would rather a free boot slot, 5k and variable haste duration (2,3,4 or 6 rounds) or an extra swift action in combat and guaranteed haste duration. I'd rather the latter. Swift actions for things like arrowmind and other magic item activation is too valuable IMHO. The MIC has too many excellent swift activation items!!! ;) Joe |

The duration is 2, 4, 6, or 8 rounds. And having a boot slot open means you can get Anklets of Translocation. Arrowmind isn't all that useful when pinned down by Evards...also, some days you know you're not going to have 3 combats(because you already fought 2 as an example), and then you've got extra Pearl 2s and a lesser extend rod to use for your other spells. |
| Swiftbrook12-27-07, 10:30 PM | I'm now comparing CWI and CA&A. Not sure which is a better fit. But.... I really like the ideas with rod of extend. I use swift haste all the time. I figured one PoP (2) was much more worth the price than boots of speed. Rod of extend is a nice addition, but I wonder about table variation with the rod and swift actions, followed by using the bow. I was surprised by how many Wonderous items a ranger can craft from the DMG. Thanks. -Swiftbrook |
| Swiftbrook01-02-08, 11:55 AM | After looking at then again, Craft Arms and Armor is not worth it. My 12th level ranger has a caster level of 6 which means he can up to a +2 bonus. You need a caster level of three times the bonus. Therefore the cost savings is minimal. Now that might be OK for some weapons, or you might get table variation stating that to add a +1 bonus enhancement to a +2 weapon requires a caster level as a +3 weapon. For armor, it's not worth it. If I could create it, I could afford +4 armor. What I really wanted to create was Celestial Armor and save 12,000 GP. Not to be. -Swiftbrook |

Rod of extend is a nice addition, but I wonder about table variation with the rod and swift actions, followed by using the bow. There shouldn't be table variation - Swift Haste is a verbal-only spell. You can carry a bow in one hand and a rod in the other and only spontaneous casters change the casting time of a spell. It is a free action to drop something. You obviously don't have to have two hands on the bow at all times or you couldn't draw arrows to fire the bow. That doesn't mean someone won't put table variation in there, but if you get access to a least crystal of return, just buy 1 and put it on your bow - that will make it a free action to 'draw' the bow if someone forces you to do that. |

Cool idea. Too bad you can't have two crystals on a weapon. I have access to Greater Crystal of Truedeath. +1d6 vs. Undead, Ghost Touch and allows critical hits and sneak attack damage. I'm an undead destroying machine: Favored Enemy Undead +9 (elven sub level), sacred bow (+1d6), looking at Hunting (+4 vs. favored enemy) and Improved Favored Enemy (+3). The Greater Truedeath Crystal was one item I was considering crafting but I need to be able to cast consencrate (200 gp) ten time (2,000 gp) so the savings is only 3,000 gp. -Swiftbrook |

Then at ranger level 14, with the caster level ioun stone, you could craft +4 arms and armor. Ed |
| SpacePope01-07-08, 02:03 AM | Question on the flip side of this, I have a cleric with access to an item that requires a Fireball spell to craft. Can I use a sphere from my Necklace of Fireballs to craft it or dose it have to be a scroll or the spell itself? |

Can I use a sphere from my Necklace of Fireballs to craft it or dose it have to be a scroll or the spell itself? I'm pretty sure you need to cast the spell itself, either from a scroll or memory/spell slot. I don't even think that a wand would work. |
| magebeast01-07-08, 11:17 AM | I'm pretty sure you need to cast the spell itself, either from a scroll or memory/spell slot. I don't even think that a wand would work. Wands work if you have the spell on your list. A sorcerer crafting something, for instance. |
| Howie2301-07-08, 11:47 AM | Wands work if you have the spell on your list. A sorcerer crafting something, for instance. Wands work as long as you can activate it (magic domain or UMD both work, for example). |
| SpacePope01-07-08, 12:46 PM | So take that as a no on the using the necklace? |
| magebeast01-07-08, 01:19 PM | So take that as a no on the using the necklace? I'm going to say no, because you're not actually casting fireballs. You have spheres that detonate as the fireball spell, but are not actually fireballs. |
| JamesMaissen01-07-08, 01:29 PM | So take that as a no on the using the necklace? You don't cast the spell with the necklace.. rather you throw a bead and the effects of a fireball occur. You need to have the spell cast (by person or device) each day of creation. Using a device like a scroll, wand, or staff will suffice.. while a potion obviously will not. Now wondrous items would depend upon whether or not they cast the spell or merely grant the effects. -James |
| Hariman01-13-08, 11:32 AM | Hang on a second. Couldn't you use a wand to craft another wand? So if I got a hold of a wand of Baleful Transposition (10 charges) and had the Craft Wand Feat, couldn't I craft a new wand of Baleful Transposition? Or is there something that I'm missing that would prevent this? |

That requirement cannot be met by another spell storage device. A wand or scroll can be used to satisfy the spell prerequisite of an item that has such a prerequisite. Prerequisites are listed with the item description, such as summon monster I for crafting a bane weapon. See this related post: http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=14784529&postcount=9 |

See this related post: http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=14784529&postcount=9 Thank God. I didn't think I'd be able to do something so abusive. But I'm the type of person who will check to make sure. If just because my checking means that the "no" answer is ready for others. It's like using a "Sell an item for 75% value" to sell a crafted item. You can't do it because of the clause in the LGCS that states that you can't profit off of crafting. The relevant quote is on page 9 of the LGCS, and it states that you can't sell an item for more that what you purchased it for. You basically "purchase" a crafted item at half value. |
| Swiftbrook01-20-08, 06:37 PM | New Item Creation Question: Can you add Blueshine (MIC +1,500 gp) to Celestial Armor? I have access to both. Left hand says "No, Celestial Blueshine Armor is not a standard item, so it can't be crafted/purchased." Right hand says "Yes, Blueshine in not a + bonus addition just a +1,500 gp addition and it can be added to any armor." -Swiftbrook |
| Timlagor01-20-08, 07:34 PM | No to the Blueshine: left hand is right. There is no mention of being a +-equivalent enchantment in the LGCS reference to upgrading named items. [obvioulsy the exception would be specific access to upgrade that specific named item in that way] |
