| Ramacass06-05-07, 09:07 AM | I have a favor that reads- Mithral: The PC may purchase any one metal suit of armor or sheild listed in the Players handbook as a mithral item. Is there an implied "metal" in the second clause ie "or (metal) sheild listed in the players handbook as a mithral item" Basically I want a Mithral tower sheild. If the above favor can't be used to buy a mithral tower sheild has anyone seen any mithral tower sheild access? |
| chesspiece06-05-07, 09:42 AM | Since the favor limits you to PHB equipment, you can't get a Mithral Tower Shield since the PHB version is wood - therefore DMG rules won't let you turn it into metal / mithral. LGCS597 opened up access to armor from Races of Stone, including the Tower Shield, Metal. If you had access to a Mithral version of any shield you already have access to, that would give you what you want. I don't have my ARs on-hand so I don't know whether I've seen access. |
| Ramacass06-06-07, 03:59 AM | Has anyone seen access to a mithral tower sheild on any of their ARs? I might just break down and buy a steel one. Thanks |
| solbergb06-07-07, 06:05 PM | that's a strong character....steel tower shields weigh 100lb. Is there a reason the wood one isn't good enough? |
| jstorrie06-07-07, 07:49 PM | The mithral one is much harder to sunder? It may even be a little lighter. If lightness is what you want, though, you could use darkwood, couldn't you? |
| solbergb06-07-07, 09:02 PM | masterwork tower shield- 200gp, 50lb Mithril tower shield - ?gp (multithousands likely), 50lb Yeah, it is hardness 14 instead of hardness 5. Is that worth the cost? |

Mithral tower sheild weighs 50lbs cost's 1050gp has hardness 15 and 60hp, max dex bonus +4 ACP-7. yeah it's worth an extra 850gp I plan on using it for total cover often so I don't want to enchant a wooden one and then get it sundered |
| _metz_06-08-07, 01:42 AM | If you use it often, its really ASKING to be sundered :) |
| lseelba06-08-07, 03:23 AM | Wood also burns...from fire spells :D |
| KarmaInferno06-08-07, 10:54 AM | If you're worried about Sunder, Adamantine is definitely the better material to use, anyhow. -karma |
| bitznarf06-08-07, 11:28 AM | Wood also burns...from fire spells :D Oddly enough, most spells with the [Fire] descriptor don't set things on fire. I can't think of one offhand that does, but there is probably one out there. |
| KarmaInferno06-08-07, 11:42 AM | Oddly enough, most spells with the [Fire] descriptor don't set things on fire. I can't think of one offhand that does, but there is probably one out there. By the FAQ, any non-instantaneous fire effect has the chance of setting objects on fire, unless it specifically says that it does not in the effect description. -karma |
| solbergb06-08-07, 12:48 PM | wow, only 1000gp for 50 pounds of mithril? Can I fabricate it into heavy plate? The costings are kind of weird, given that 1000gp is about 2 pounds of mithril used for anything but a shield. I dunno. My dwarf has used a tower shield his entire career and nobody has ever wasted actions trying to sunder it. He's only used it for cover twice, YMMV if you are in constricted quarters and use that tactic a lot. a +1 tower shield (which costs the same as the mithril) is hardness 7, 30 hitpoints. That's generally enough, it's certanly enough to resist 1d6 of nuisance damage from being set on fire, and as an attended item it won't be taking any other damage unless somebody specifically targets it or you roll a "1" on a reflex save - and even then, with fire and electricity halved and cold quartered, often that means nothing. I was assuming from the weight it cost a lot more. 850gp isn't that much more if you have access, although I'd probably go for darkwood to save some weight if I had the option to do both. |

Several do. Fireball specifically sets fire to combustibles and damages objects in the area. It can melt metals with low melting points, such as lead, gold, copper, silver, and bronze. (PHB p.231) Of course though, all attended objects save with you unless otherwise stated, and magical objects often get saves even if they're not attended. |
| Golorious06-15-07, 06:44 PM | Yes there has been several sources of access that allowed the purchasing of Mithral Tower Shields. Some of them required you to have access to a Metal tower shield first. But not all of them. I have seen someone with an animated Mithral Tower shield and it was legal. The other reason for a Mithral Tower Shield is the Dex bonus max on the shield is +4 instead of +2. It has a slightly lower ASF but it is still really too high to buy for any arcane caster. |

Currently my only tower shield weilders are dex 10 and dex 12, so the tower shield limitation wasn't on my radar. |
