| Rerednaw02-26-07, 02:05 PM | I cannot find it under the monster index here. I was wondering where the rules were for mobs. Thanks. |
| gomeztoo02-26-07, 02:09 PM | In the DMG II |
| DerekSTheRed03-01-07, 07:17 PM | "Mob" is an acquired template listed in the DMG2 on page 59 and reprinted in Cityscape on page 124. Derek |
| Rerednaw03-04-07, 09:54 PM | Aha, thanks. Another book I don't have...natch. |
| DerekSTheRed03-04-07, 09:55 PM | Aha, thanks. Another book I don't have...natch. Cityscape doesn't have much if anything to offer LG. If LG is your only campaign I would not recommend buying it. Derek |

Derek Actually I was curious from an author standpoint. I am working on a mod and was considering using the mob template. It's not going to work though, I read the description and the critter I want to use doesn't fit. |

A lot of judges don't know how to run them and it always bogs down the mod. Derek |
| Evanta03-04-07, 11:45 PM | My DM has already seen a Mob template in one of the modules. Fortunately it wasn't at APL 4. |

Derek Well, it was for a non-lethal encounter. I would not throw a mob as a typical party encounter, the CR is way way off. And I do agree it really bogs down gameplay. Of course I don't like how 90% of all LG encounters are from surprise at point-blank range either. :D |
| Tarlyn Alurach03-15-07, 04:10 PM | Mobs as an idea, I love it. Mobs as that broken down, P.O.S. template that they printed, someone should get slapped for it. |
| Zanzibax03-15-07, 04:15 PM | I cannot find it under the monster index here. I was wondering where the rules were for mobs. Thanks. Da mobs rulz? We keep 'em in da Family. Youts wanna know da rulz? Doan' messa widda Family. Got it? :incog: |
| Reska03-18-07, 11:01 AM | Just say no to Mobs! |
| Mithrus03-18-07, 01:18 PM | Just say no to Mobs! I concur. I was at a Con this weekend, and having to face a mob of vampire spawn is just WRONG. It's bad enough that evidently a mob can squeeze into your square down a 5' corridor, but it doesn't even provoke AoO's!!?? Since they are treated as similar to a swarm, they auto hit every round, causing negative levels as well. WTH!!! Sorry, someone needs to loose their job at WotC for letting crap like this be printed. I'll withdraw that sentiment if the DM did the mob rules wrong, but in any case, I want to kick the mod writers for using it to begin with... |
| Japangirl03-18-07, 07:27 PM | Mobs made up of creatures with status effects and/or equipment destroying potential are just wrong. Ghouls/ghasts (paralysis), vampire spawns (negative levels), rust monsters (byebye equipment), chaos beasts (turn into a chaos beast, lost character), etc should not receive a template that causes them to auto-hit. Mob rules could be used at mod-writers' discretion for things like, oh, a bunch of panicked commoners, but nothing much nastier than that IMO. |
| ShinAkuma203-18-07, 09:27 PM | Mob rules could be used at mod-writers' discretion for things like, oh, a bunch of panicked commoners, but nothing much nastier than that IMO. I totally agree with that. I always saw mobs in terms of thrown together groups of weak creatures. If the creatures can effectively fight and pose a threat on their own, there's no reason for them to mob. |
| Reska03-18-07, 10:13 PM | Mobs are the most evillest evil that ever evilled an evil evil. And they don't even take that much brain power to run. Just.."Rarh! (trample trample trample auto-damage) Rarrh!". The last time I went against a Mob, the only way we got through was the judge was being somewhat lenient, and allowed us to close a door with an ongoing effect inside (Step 1: Haboob running for 6 minutes.. Step 2: close the door and hold it shut with earth elementals...Step 3: wait...Step 4: figure out whether you want to take an average of 180d4 or just roll it all out...Step 5: Increase damage by 50% cause of the AoE...Step 6: Profits). Not fun...not fun at all. Evil. Evil. |
| Tarlyn Alurach03-19-07, 10:56 AM | They mobbed vampire spawn? WTF? Just because it is there doesn't mean that it should be used. |
| evilaustintom03-19-07, 11:26 AM | I was at a convention last weekend that had mobs as well in their interactive. (Perhaps the same convention mentioned above?) At APL 8, 4 gargantuan mobs of ghasts flooded down our corridor. The triad member running our table cold wasn't totally familiar with the mob rules, and almost didn't allow our Radiant Servant of Pelor to even make a dent in the 4 mobs with his turning check. When we got that cleared up, it STILL took a few 14th level PCs from other tables running over to save our PCs (there were 2 APL 8 tables - one had a party full of paralyzed PCs, while our table was about 1/2 paralyzed). Considering the monster special attack DCs are based on the mob's Hit Dice...yeah, like many templated combos, they can easily be incorrectly CRed. Tom Thowe |
| Asaris03-19-07, 06:43 PM | Yeah, I was at that other table. Even if our cleric of Pelor had managed to get a turn off, we would have been toast without those higher level PCs. And it wasn't a cakewalk for them. But a friend of mine pointed something out to me -- all you have to do is fly, since they don't have reach. (I'm now the proud owner of a potion of fly.) |
| Timlagor03-19-07, 10:53 PM | There's a reason I always recommend Mass Fly as any Arcanist's first 5th level spell :) |
| Japangirl03-20-07, 12:47 AM | Poor man's bracers of flying here :). Take bracers of armor +1. Add a favor that allows any armor enchant to be added, then another that allows access to the feathered enchant from Miniature's Handbook. Fly for 50 min/day, std action to activate. I use them every combat to make my speed go up to 60 ft. |

Normally, that's a good tactic to use, but it wouldn't have worked in our situation. It was underground, and technically, the gargantuan creatures filled the whole cavern - I don't think the environment would have allowed us to fly. But yeah, flying is normally a good way to keep you out of the thick of things... Tom Thowe |
| wagnert03-20-07, 01:32 PM | This past weekend at a convention in Mississippi, Coastcon, I played at a table that had a Mob of (animals). The DM had problems figuring out how to run it and it turned a normal encounter into an hour combat. We drove off the Mob in one encounter, and in a later combat it came back at full hit points again. The trample run infuriated me personally. I can understand taking a move action and trampling us, but he had the mob do a double move and still do trample action. I don't think this should be allowed, as any other creature taking a double move, can't attack and do damage. |

It really seems to end up making it feel like the DM is actually hostile instead of just indifferent to the players' fate. Fight the hate! Ban the mob template! |
