| Ferol, Debtor of Torm01-22-08, 04:02 PM | Where are the specific details for riding a mount underwater? Could I get a saddle for my Orca animal companion and ride it underwater? Would such a saddle require special access or would it be covered by the stuff in the PHB? Is riding any more difficult underwater than it is on land? Thanks, -Nick |

Thanks, -Nick Congratulations, you've stumbled upon another area completely not covered by the rules...There's nothing to suggest you can't ride underwater, and depending on the animal you would at worst need an exotic saddle from the PHB, which is still open access. As far as difficulty of riding...there's nothing specifically mentioned, but it seems like there should be some kind of penalty to your ride checks unless you are under the effect of Freedom of Movement or something...since water is gonna put up a lot more resistance than air... |
| Ferol, Debtor of Torm01-22-08, 04:41 PM | Oh how I hate you 3.5. The worst part of this is the table variation. I wouldn't mind so much if the rules weren't in my favor as long as they were consistent. |

Well I'm almost positive there are examples of creatures riding other creatures somewhere...But how often does it come up anyway? One in ten mods you actually go underwater? |

You can always plan for whatever you can drum up as the worst situation and see if you still like it. Or, ask your regular judges but recognize the limitation if you play outside of your normal circle. What could you run into: 1. Exotic Saddle should be covered. 2. Unsuitable mount penalty to ride. 3. If no FoM, need for Concentration, Ride, Swim, and/or Balance check while being buffetted around. 4. Need for Water Breathing for aquatic mammal mount; beware of forms that don't share. Others? |

Of course, 2 open spells make needing a mount underwater unnecessary for a druid of sufficient level...Cloak of the Sea is completely badass for any underwater mod...1 hour/level, grants blur, water breathing, and FoM while underwater...touch range 5th level spell. And Swim is a 2nd level spell...get a swim speed for 10 minutes/level.... |
| Ferol, Debtor of Torm01-22-08, 05:32 PM | Unfortunately this character is just a ranger and only has level 1 ranger spells. What do you mean by forms that don't share? You can share almost any spell with an animal companion. |

"Ride Aquatic Mount Underwater: Staying on a fast-swimming mount underwater is difficult, because the water resistance tends to push a rider off. Add +5 to the DC of any Ride check made underwater." |
| Timlagor01-23-08, 07:43 AM | Check out Waveriders :( |

Ah, my intuition was pretty good on that...knew it was a difference of about 5 to your riding... |
| solbergb01-23-08, 08:38 PM | Swim doesn't help the fullplate tank very much. If you're encumbered over light or have greater than light armor you don't get a swim speed, just +8 and take 10 to your "land creature" swim check. For that you put an exotic saddle on your animal companion, and cast swim on the companion :) If the GM is very picky cast freedom of movement on the rider. But I think that's wrong. The mount does the movement, it should not be different for swimming than for flying. If it has a swim speed, it's all good. (I favor giant crocodiles underwater myself, although the sharks are adequate) The stormwrack rule looks ok to me. It's allowed, but doing anything fancy that would normaly require a ride check is a bit harder. |
