Few PCs have Craft Magical Arms and Armor, this is because it is effectively useless for an LG arcane casters, and only marginally more useful for Clerics. Wizards rarely use weapons or armor, Bards and Sorcerers need their spell slots (yes they can use scrolls but this increases the cost dramatically). I can only see this being useful for certain PrC like Spellswords, Clerics, or casters with a cohort. Crafting at higher APLs (12+) normally doesn't make sense, but with repairing items the 75% discount will make it viable up to APL 14. For example a 10,000GP item costs normally 2TU, 5,000 GP and 200XP. Repairing this item would cost the repairer 1TU and 100XP assuming the the item owner pays 2,500GP. Assuming the crafter met the item crafting requirements, at APL 10 this would effectively cost the crafter an additional 1,350XP and 2,300GP in lost adventures. Total cost for repairing an 10,000GP item at APL 10 would be 1TU, 1,450XP and 4,800GP. Concerns/issues: 1.Either player can pay the GP cost. Thereby allowing the transfer of resources between players. 2.The PC who suffered the loss will get to adventure in those TU's that the repairer will not. 3.Certain classes will be able to take a “Charity” feat, possibly blurring the lines of unethical conduct per the RPGA rules, see bribery in the penalty guidelines. 4.The repair rules imply that only a PC can repair an item but the do not implicitly exclude NPCs, or explicitly say only PCs. Possible ideas: 1.Even out the cost between both the repairer and the item owner so they share all costs 50/50. 2.Implicitly allow NPCs to repair items. 3.Allow Cohorts to craft but only when repairing items and have them pay full cost. 4.Since one person will be burning a feat for charity, have the item owner pay the full XP and TU cost. Paying the XP cost is already a precedence in some cases, like spells with an XP requirement. 5.Since this is effectively a charity service that some players might be willing to perform, could we somehow make it so its not so painful for the charitable repair-person. I could see myself warming up to doing this for people I am friends with if the year was winding down and I had spare TU/XP, and an extra feat slot to burn on a purely charitable cause. CJP :D |
