Hi, all. What do you do if you playtest an adventure that's being released in the current year and are out of TUs when the adventure is released?

The LGCS states on page 20, "All results of a playtest are considered effective as of the date of release of the adventure. You receive rewards based on the APL played and your PC’s level when the playtest occurred. TUs must be paid during the year the adventure is released."

The LGCS also states on page 20, "You may not spend TUs from next year unless you are forced to spend a specific number of TUs by an adventure beyond what the adventure would normally cost or have campaign documentation allowing you to do so."

Does that mean you never get an AR for your playtest?

As you posted:

or have campaign documentation allowing you to do so.

You also said,

TUs must be paid during the year the adventure is released.

There's your campaign documentation. The LGCS says you have to pay those TUs during the year of release, and so you must. If they come out of next year's TUs, so be it.

I'm not thinking that's what the OP is asking.

The question was if you've spent all the TU'S for the next year (for some reason), and you playtested one this year that debuts next year, how do you spend the TU'S for next year on it?

It sounds like he's talking about this sort of situation...

Hi, I'm Bob the Fighter. I have 2 TUs left for CY 597.
I playtest a two-round regional module, which cost me 2 TUs, but I have not received an AR for it.
I then decide to go play a Core, since I had 2 TUs remaining.
My AR for the playtest module arrives; what do I do?

Back to reality, my answer would be: Congratulations, Bob, you have just circumvented the 52 TUs/year limit, since you merely have to have those TUs available when you start playing the module, which in both cases, you did. Spend 2 TUs from CY 598 and enjoy your AR!

In that circumstance I'd say tough Bob - you knew the module was due to come out and still chose to play that core module, you lose out.

If however Bob's previous module had a 'becuase you did X you must spend an extra 2 tu's for this mod' (thus leaving him no tu's left) and the module came out I'd let him use next year's tu's.

Similarly if Bob had been told this mod you playtested this year is due out next year but for some reason it actually came out this year again I'd let him use next year's tu's if he didn't have enough of this year's left.

The basic guiding rule (in my view) is that if Bob has made every effort to ensure he has enough tu's for when the module is planned to be released he shouldn't be penalised for things beyond his control. If however he just played anyway then tough, he suffers the consequences. Of course if such a situation did arise I'd check with my circle rep to make sure everything was ok but I've not seen such a situation in my region.

I think the best answer is "don't do it: plan better".
If it happens despite your best attempts then you can probably spend the subsequent year's TUs.

Cancelling the AR completely introduces other complications -not every AR is a good thing for the character.

Yeah, that's basically how my Triad handled it when I asked them for a ruling in a similar situation (getting a L7 PC trapped in Rauxes in early December - when the mod you playtested is premiering in late December). I would email your Triad though.

Thanks, everyone: I was checking to see if there was a known ruling from The Powers That Be, but it looks it's an ambiguous situation.

One of the things I was wondering was whether the intention behind the "pay TUs in the year the adventure is released" ruling was to stop people spending this year's TUs on an adventure that premieres next year - and it's caught people who run out of TUs in the current year as a secondary effect. This has been tightened up since the 596 LGCS, which didn't have the "required to pay TUs in the year the adventure is released" prescription.

Anyway, I'll go and hassle the Triad and see how they want to handle it.
