PrC question from a new player [Archive] - Wizards Community

I'm trying to decide where I want my character to go .. and where I'd like alternate characters to go as far as PrCs go.

From what I understand, I can take any PrC that's listed as core as long as I meet the requirements. Access to the limited PrCs (as well as spells & feats) are granted only on certain mods .. if it's on your AR you can take it.

Is that right?

Also, can I take more than on PrC per character? Assuming all requirements are met, of course.

Thanks

Some core PrCs do have special requirements which you still have to meet. You should check the LGCS to see what they might be. Some may require contacting your triad.

For example, sacred exorcist requires a church that sanctions the order. There could be meta-orgs your character could join to gain the needed access. Otherwise, you might need a special mission.

There may also be some limitations on what you can do with a PrC. For instance, you have to play an honorable dread pirate and not a dishonorable dread pirate. In most cases, the LGCS will say what applies if needed.

Certain prestige classes are granted via metaorganizations, so check your regional website for a list of those, and check the websites of regions around your own, when you can manage to play there as well. a lot of metaorganisations nowadays require that you at least play one regional module of the region to be able to enter, some even require residency of YOUR CHARACTER in the region.

sometimes "special" encounters are included in some adventure and you get "hints" from your triad to play a certain module with a certain character (or the boilerplate state something promising).

last and least likely option is to get a special mission, a "personal" adventure for getting access to a certain prestige class or feat. you have to contact your triad for this, if they aprove your plea (and they have no obligation to do so), a special adventure is made up for your character (you must bring along a table of other players, that help you on your quest, and even find a dm for it). And you are limited to ONE special mission per year, whether you were the person asking for it or you only took a seat at someone elses table.

you can take as many classes and prestige classes as you can stuff into a character :). the highest number of different classes seem to go with archers, a ranger, barbarian, fighter, scout, wildrunner, initiate of the bow, pious templar, occult slayer, dipping into one caster class level, and others in any combination you like seems not to uncommon.

second in multiclassing seem to be the melee fighter types, they concentrate mostly on the d10 and d12 hp classes for obvious reasons.

least likely for extensive multiclassing are clerics, druids, wizards, sorcerers, and warmages as most of them don't want and should give up any spellcasting ability progression.

Hey, I've got one little question related to the aformentioned Dread Pirates.

If I somehow manage to STEAL a sailing ship during a module (instead of purchasing one out of the PHB), AND get it annoted in play notes by the DM then do I meet the requirements for the class? Or do I have to actually pay for one?

You know the rules. You don't get anything out of a module unless you pay for it. If you want to say it's a pirate ship you captured for role-playing reasons, that shouldn't be a problem, but you still have to pay the PHB cost for the ship. If it's not in the treasure summary, you can't keep it.

There are mods that grant access to ships, but you still pay for them one way or another.

Ok, I figured as much, I'll just save my 10,000 gold for the sailing ship out of the player's handbook. Having to buy the ship makes it tough to be a pirate king though, since 10,000 of the first 15,000 gold I see is going to have to go towards that ship! :D

I still think I'll try to get a group of buddies together who are willing to dump a module and go way off script by hijacking a boat, which I will then pay for at the end of the module. It is a lot more satisfying that way.

Two words: Folding Boat. :) If you can get access, it's cheaper than a ship.
