Hi, im new to living greyhawk and living campaigns in general, and i have a question about purchasing items. In the LGCS it says that you may purchase items found on the adventure (assuming you have the correct APL). So, am i correct in understanding that in order to obtain an item found on the adventure you must pay? or does this mean that you can buy additional copies of items found on the adventure? Also, can more than one player purchase the same item? Thanks in advance for any help :) .

Unless the notation on the AR explicitly says otherwise, you have to pay the standard price for the item. Having it on your AR only gives you "access" to purchase the item; it doesn't actually give you the item.

Similarly, unless the AR explicitly says otherwise, all PCs at a table have access to buy every item shown on the AR as "found" (thus, in a sense, it's possible for all 6 PCs to "buy" the same item).

At the end of the adventure (and not before) all the 'loot' is sold at half price and divided evenly between the PCs.
Each PC gets 1/12th of the value of any item and 1/6 of the 'cash' found.
[it's divided by 6 even at smaller tables because there was an unhealthly tendency for people to form 4-player tables and refuse to let others join them when it was based on the number of players]

You then have the option to spend that money on 'buying items back' (if they appear on the AR which occasionally they don't). If an item was not found by the party or was used up in the course of the adventure then the GM will cross it off (or tell you to) and you will not be able to buy it.

IC you can consider items you buy in this way to be items you found and 'kept as your share of the treasure' if you so choose.

It used to be done differently but this way is considered fairer and more equitable in this sort of campaign.

Ah, okay, so the loot is sold before players are allowed to purchase it? Are players allowed to re-sell the loot again if they determine that the no longer need the item later on?

Well, not the "same loot"...

But any item that you purchase can be sold if you decide you don't want it (almost always at half price)...

..which is to say always at half price unless you have specific documentation allowing you a full refund.

Such documentation usually comes in the form of a Campaign-Wide one-off event brought about by a significant shift in the rules (ie rarely). I believe there have been one or two AR favours that allow sale at full price too but you should certainly expect not to see one.
There may well be an option to sell certain items at full price when the Circle has completed their review of the Magic Item Compendium.

The way it works is that you come out of any given adventure with a share of treasure represented by the gold award from the AR.

You can then use the gold awards to buy items off ARs. Or you can just keep it as gold for later.

You can roleplay a purchase as actually having taken an item away from the adventure, if you wish. "That axe is worth 1000 gold, and my share of treasure haul is 3000. So I'll take the axe and 2000 gold!"

However, mechanics-wise, you take the gold first and then use that to buy the axe, noting the purchase on the AR. Note that even if the item was 'unique' in the adventure, any or all of the characters can buy the item. You might have to just ignore the fact that somehow the party walked off with six copies of that Axe of Unique Existence +3.

You can later sell items, just note it on the items sold part of the AR you are selling them on. Art objects, gems, and stuff like trade goods sell at full price, most other stuff sells for half normal market value, unless of course you have some special documentation that adjusts the prices.

There are certain items which always sell at full price, per the PHB (most are irrelevant to adventurers though). And spellbooks use a different way of figuring cost that is much closer to full price than half price. So it's not "always" at half-price without campaign documentation...

On a related note. (I am also new to LG) Are items listed on your character AR aviable to buy later? Or if I don't buy it after the adventre am I out of luck if I don't have the gold?

LGCS pg8.

6. Items Found During the Adventure
Items found during the adventure are listed in this section
of the AR. Depending on the APL you play, you gain the
ability to purchase some of these items; this access is in
addition to the access listed in Appendix 4. For the purposes
of counting adventures, count each adventure only once,
even if you receive multiple ARs for the adventure, such as
for an optional encounter. These items will have a type of
access listed in parentheses:
• Adventure: May be purchased only after this adventure
or the next three adventures.
• Regional: May be purchased only after the next three
adventures and after regional adventures set in the
region(s) that appears on this AR.
• Metaregional: May be purchased only after the next
three adventures and after regional or metaregional
adventures set in the metaregion(s) that appears on this
AR.
• Core: May be purchased only after the next three
adventures and after core, core special, and adapted
adventures.
• Any: May be purchased on any AR.
• Cursed: Cursed items may only be discarded in ways
detailed in the item description. Your GM records the
removal in the Play Notes. A cursed PC must keep this
item on their MIL until it is discarded. You must inform
the GM of the cursed item before the beginning of each
game. You do not have to pay any cost to own a cursed
item, nor can you gain any GP from the loss of it.

Timlagor posted the various "types" of access from the LGCS. At worst ("Adventure" access), you always have the current adventure, plus the next three adventures your character plays in order to buy a particular item. If the type of access you're given to a particular item is one of the other types, you'll have even more time.

I meant to add the caveat that Facours (the top box) can be different but the above explains what the various normal terms mean.

Note that it's new for all categories to include the next three ARs so some people may not be aware of it.

Thanks for the clarification. I think I am now on my 4th reading of the LGCS and am still trying to absorb it all ;)

Just so I understand how it works. If I play in a Metaregional adventure and gain access to an item I have the next 3 adventures to by said items, or if say my 5th adventure was a Metaregional I could then buy the item, despite it being more than 3 adventures since I got the AR.

If this is correct, then for items other than those classified as "adventure" the only time limit, beyond the next 3 adventure, is the amount of adventures that are played in my area that fill the classification

Thanks,

Yes, if the item in question has (Access: Metaregional) noted on the AR, and if the metaregional you play for #5 is in the same metaregion. While the "Core/Regional/Metaregional" access types are pretty much directly related to the type of adventure that they're gained in, not every item in an adventure of that type will have that type of access.

If you play a Metaregional adventure, it's entirely possible that some of the items you get access to on the AR could be "Metaregional" access, some "Adventure", and some "Any." It's also entirely possible that every access item on an AR could be "Adventure".

If this is correct, then for items other than those classified as "adventure" the only time limit, beyond the next 3 adventure, is the amount of adventures that are played in my area that fill the classification

Correct. You could get "Regional" access to an item on AR #1, and go back and buy it on AR #100, if it's in the same region.

Yes, if the item in question has (Access: Metaregional) noted on the AR, and if the metaregional you play for #5 is in the same metaregion.

Also note, Metaregional access items can be bought after metaregional modules (for that metaregion) and regional modules for any of the regions that are part of that metaregion.

E.g., if I have an item "Access: Splintered Suns Metaregion", and play an Onnwal or Sunndi module (both regions in the Splintered Suns Metaregion), I can buy that item after those regional modules.

I have found that not everyone realizes that...

Okay, so another question came to me. If my AR gives access to a potion of cure light wounds, can i purchase it more than once or am i limited to only buying an item once from an AR?

You can buy an item as many times as you want if you currently have valid access.

Potion of CLW is sort of a bad example, since it's open per the LGCS, but if you got Adventure access to Pearl of Power 1st level, for instance, and had enough gold to buy 5 of them, you could.

Ok, something that has bothered me, so here goes:

I run an adventure, and in the LOOT is a item, what happens to the item at the end of that adventure if it is NOT used?

I'm not sure what you are asking.

Items appearing on the Adventure Record are available for the players to purchase. If the party finds the treasure during the adventure, and it is listed on the AR as accessible, they can purchase the item.

Items that were in the adventure but NOT listed on the adventure record are basically gone. Usually the adventure tells you what happened to these items but not always.

Ok, examples:

1. Party is given a ring by a npc, with no notes about returning the item, and the item is listed on the AR, what happens to that item.

2. Party finds a mithral shirt in the loot of a corpse, but item is not listed on AR, what then? Can a character keep the item, and 'lose' the listed amount from thier total treasure? (IE: in one adventure, a mithral shirt is shown in loot with XXXgp)

1. Party is given a ring by a npc, with no notes about returning the item, and the item is listed on the AR, what happens to that item.

Since it's on the AR, the value of that ring is figured into the GP award for the PCs. Unless the AR *specifically* says otherwise, PCs don't literally take *anything* away from an adventure except gold, and the access to purchase items.

In essence, it's assumed that they sell the ring, and can then "buy it back" with their share of the gold. Unless the AR specifically says that the ring is unique, and only one PC can end up with it, it's true that all 6 PCs could, theoretically, buy the same ring.

2. Party finds a mithral shirt in the loot of a corpse, but item is not listed on AR, what then? Can a character keep the item, and 'lose' the listed amount from thier total treasure? (IE: in one adventure, a mithral shirt is shown in loot with XXXgp)

If it's not listed on the AR, they don't get access to it. Again, the PCs don't walk out of the module with any actual item from the loot...they walk out with a GP share, and that's it.

All items found int he adventure are sold at the end of the adventure. That is the primary source of gp in most adventures.

After the adventure any PC with the funds can buy anything that appears on the AR. Things that you find will generally appear on your AR. Things that you don't find or that you used up in the course of the adventure will be crossed out on the AR.

You never* get any items without paying for them.

Your Examples:
1) You must pay if you wish to have the ring
2) You can't have the armour.

* ..except when you do but this will be made very clear.

Am I the only one that never plays that specific character in the series/region ever again if I get a freebie item out of an adventure? So many of them seem to turn around and bite you in later modules if you are carrying them.

You probably are. Most of us are more concerned by with the story ..and anyway the curses tend to hit whether or not you play the sequels (which may be crucial to getting rid of them).

Personally, I never viewed the various curses and weird effects you get out of adventuring as something I as a player wanted to avoid.

My CHARACTERS might disagree strongly with me, but bad stuff happening can be as rich a motivation for roleplaying as good stuff can be.

I'm here to have fun. Not just to collect virtual loot for a fictional persona.

Sometimes that means subjecting my fictional persona to bad things.

Might I add that in an increasing number of mods there are really bad things that happen to you, with minimal rewards?

Also there is no reasonable chance of avoiding said bad things?

Perrenland anyone? :P

Meh, it makes you more characterful... I take it in stride and accept the good with the bad.

I just wish there was more 'funky' (doesn't need to be useful) AR items to go along with the bad curses and dodgy items etc.

I generally do what Paigeoliver does. Though it has more to do with making tables happen than avoiding curses. If the author writers a really great mod, then I'll try to play it with the same character.

But I find the really great writers don't include amazing favors or feel some need to make up for giving out too much in one mod. Personally, I'd rather not have huge favors or curses. They end up being kind of silly. "Hi, I've been horribly cursed, but I can't head to Greyhawk, find a high priest of X, and get him to remove it."
