| Inyssius09-30-06, 03:13 PM | I'm toying with the idea of making a character with a Large bastard-sword. Do the Living Greyhawk rules allow me to buy oversized weapons? |
| Halworth09-30-06, 03:32 PM | Yes and no. Yes if you PC is LARGE always (Centar or similar) Yes if you have access granted by an AR. Otherwise no. The might be some other ways to get access but generally no. |
| clannagh10-01-06, 01:46 AM | There is of course the option to use clubs and quarterstaffs .. to get larger ones just pick up a bigger stick. This loophole is no help if you want mastercrafted or magic versions. Some of our local players at one stage considered the possibility of taking monkey grip - quarterstaff, collecting some large sticks and then casting Shillelagh on them when needed to make them magic and effectively 3 sizes above medium. Fortunately no-one actually pursued this somewhat ludicrous plan. |
| Iswald10-01-06, 09:29 AM | Yes if you PC is LARGE always (Centar or similar) Centaurs may only purchase large weapons once they become large (or have access). Small characters are the only ones able to buy weapons larger than their size since they can acquire medium sized weapons without AR access. Sadly, you wouldn't even be able to have large quarterstaves even though the cost is nothing since PCs can only have small or medium weapons without some kind of access. |

Are you sure about that ? The restriction seem to prevent you BUYING large weapons but the PHB pretty much states you can pick up any handy lump of wood laying around and use it as a club or quarterstaff. |
| clik_ml10-02-06, 08:03 AM | There certainly should be no problem in creating a larger weapon if you have the means. Some DMs might drag their heels at finding a suitable large quarterstaff or club, since not just any log will do. But if you can wood shape it that is surely enough. I plan to play a bonded summoner someday with a huge earth elemental familiar who will use a huge greatsword. I don't expect to ever find access, but fabricate will do the trick. Just gotta do it at the start of each mod. Barring that, there is always the hope of requesting a special mission from your triad to gain access for an oversized weapon. I don't generally advocate this since triads already have a lot on their table, but the option does exist. |

You have access to table '7-5: Weapons (small and medium sized)'. You're getting it from the table even if you are paying 0 gold for it. If you want to craft one, that's fine too. But, doesn't crafting take a week? It's pretty much assured that you'd succeed. Don't think you'd want to spend a TU making a quarterstaff you couldn't bring along to the next mod though. Clubs are the weapon the PHB says is trivial to make. Fabricate is fine, though you'd still need to make a craft check for a greatsword. An extra suit of chainmail should have enough material to make a huge greatsword. |
| Ira_Dei10-02-06, 11:46 AM | So if you can do it with Fabricate, can you, using craft: weaponsmith, make your own large sized weapons? A fighter needs to know. |
| kenobi6510-02-06, 11:57 AM | So if you can do it with Fabricate, can you, using craft: weaponsmith, make your own large sized weapons? A fighter needs to know. Nope, because the only legal use of Craft in LG is to make extra GPs after modules. |
| Gelth10-04-06, 04:37 PM | Getting an Elemental to wield a weapon is something that isn't covered by the rules, so your mileage will vary. I'd be strongly tempted to not allow it, but I hadn't considered the possibility before. Bonded Summoner is a PrC that I'm a particular fan of. If you have the requisite skills you should certainly be able to use craft skills during an adventure, subject to normal restrictions (like time taken). Anything you craft will, as stated above, vanish at the end of the module. Crafting a Large or larget quarterstaff or club should be doable in many adventures. --Penn, Ket Triad |

I'd be strongly tempted to not allow it, but I hadn't considered the possibility before. Ehhh, elementals even get proficiency with simple weapons if they are generally humanoid in form. So it's arguable that earth elementals even get those, as every depiction of earth elementals that I've ever seen (including minis), gives them arms and hands. I wouldn't expect the proficiency, but not having proficiency is not the same as not being able to wield weapons period, and nowhere does anything say that elementals may not wield weapons... just that some have free natural proficiency with simple weapons and some do not. I wouldn't bother even pressing the issue of simple weapon profs since I'd often just be casting Master's Touch to grant martial proficiency (to negate the -4 penalty) anywho. |
| Gelth10-05-06, 04:31 PM | Good enough for me, sounds like it would indeed be able to wield a club. Thus, the benefit of actually looking things up is shown. :) --Penn, Ket Triad |

There shapes are malleble. I wouldn't be too surprised if you DM rules otherwise and he is within his right to do so, since there is no hard rule that states Earth Elementals are humanoid in shape. So you will still get a lot of variation. |
| Grantor10-06-06, 01:49 PM | And he's still casting Master's Touch to give the elemental proficiency... |
