Purchased animals come with one trick per point of INT. Britt has stated that this is not intended to reduce the amount of training a war trained mount (such as riding dogs and warhorses) has. I can't find the post at the moment, but it is around somewhere. With that in mind... Now, I purchased a riding dog for my mounted character. I am using it as a mount (halfling cavalry). *Can i use the Combat Riding package in the PHB? *Am I restricted to just taking the Attack trick(two slots so it will attack anything)? *What counts as being "Trained for War" ( If trained for war, these animals can make trip attacks just as wolves do (see the Wolf entry)). *Do I need to teach it the Track trick in order to use its racial Track feat and scent? Thanks for any clarifications you may offer. 1) It already has it. 2) I don't think you can get a riding dog that has the the attack unnatural trick without campaign documentation or spending the TUs/gold retraining your dog. 3) 'Trained for war' is subject to table variation. Its not defined anywhere. From my experience I've found that having the complete combat riding package works with most GMs. 4) No. At least I've never seen a GM rule that it is needed. You should be able to find more complete answers here on the Open trick list that ken has compiled for our use: http://members.aol.com/kenjenks/lg/ |
| Britt08-10-07, 01:28 PM | The next DC will be out before Gencon and covers this. Riding dogs have the combat riding package by default, but you can use the two free tricks they would get per the LGCS to replace any two tricks in the package with other tricks you have access to. |

ETV I guess, but the Track feat on the dog means it is capable of tracking by scent, the track trick on the dog means you are capable of ordering it to use that ability. Just like any dog is capable of attacking an undead but you can only order a properly trained dog to do so. I would generally rule you need the track trick to get your dog to track by scent, but I would allow exceptions if you have some other way to communicate with the animal. |

Excellent. Circle has done well. Many halflings will rejoice. Thanks for the update, Britt. |
