| Davorshan03-07-06, 12:46 PM | As an Elf I have gained Access to Elven weapons and I like to take improved weapon familiarity to use them. On the other hand I like to become a Champion of Corellon. In the special prequesites it states that you need either Weapon Focus(longsword) or exotic weapon proficiency(elven Thinblade). The question is: By taking improved weapon familarity will I be fullfilling the prequesites or do i still have to take either of the ones asked for? |
| haferka03-08-06, 06:01 PM | I would say, yes. but, i'm nobody. |
| redgamer03-08-06, 09:12 PM | Also nobody, but if I rember correctly the circle has clarified that only the feat explicately mentioned (EWP) works. This is also how I would rule if anyone asked me my opinion although I strongly consider house ruling otherwise I don't think the rules allow any other interpretation. |
| Greyson03-09-06, 01:52 AM | Regrettably, we'd want to adhere to the requirements as written. While I think taking Improved Weapon Familiarity meets the spirit of the requirement, it does not satisfy the text, which reads Exotic Weapon Proficiency (elven thinblade or elven courtblade). So, I would say stick to the requirements as written for a Champion of Correllon. What we don't want to do is get in the habit of interpreting feats too broadly and infering a benefit that is not there, no matter how close it seems to align with our goal. |
| JohnduBois03-09-06, 08:34 AM | Compare this prerequisite to that of Exotic Weapon Master, which is satisfied by Improved Weapon Familiarity. If they had meant for IWF to satisfy the requirements, they'd have written it that way. |
| Lomiat03-09-06, 01:12 PM | I expect the class requires you to have either the EWP or Weapon Focus (longsword). As such, IWP would not satisfy the requirements. However, I was told (whether its true or not) that the description of the thinblade mentions that Weapon Focus (longsword) transfers over. Thus, the Weapon Focus wouldn't be a wasted feat (if you were to use a longsword); likewise, some feat supposedly transfers to the Greatblade, too. |

If they had meant for IWF to satisfy the requirements, they'd have written it that way. That's a rather optimistic view of their writing/editing process. Nonetheless IWP won't get you into CoCL in LG. |

| Davorshan03-10-06, 02:05 PM | That's a rather optimistic assessment of their development/writing/editing process. I completly agree with that one. But in the end taking Weapon focus (longsword) and Improved Weapon familiarity doesnt hurt that much as the Weapon focus also works for the Elven Thinblade and this might be the reason why they wrote it the way they did. ;) "Still hoping for an errata" ;) |
| Ubeor03-24-06, 03:09 PM | To further complicate matters, Complete Warrior specifically states (on page 155): "Even if a character treats an exotic weapon as a martial weapon thanks to weapon familiarity, it is still treated as an exotic weapon for the purpose of qualifying for feats, prestige classes, or other benefits that require the character to be skilled in the use of an exotic weapon." (emphasis added) So it could easily be ruled either way. |
| Lomiat03-24-06, 05:20 PM | Yes, with familiarity, the weapon is still considered exotic. However, this does nothing to fulfill the requirement that the character take a specific feat. |
| theliel04-04-06, 01:00 PM | Yes, with familiarity, the weapon is still considered exotic. However, this does nothing to fulfill the requirement that the character take a specific feat. it could be argued however that IWF grants the character a specific subset of exotic weapon proficiencies with the following weapons: which is equivilant to taking each feat individually. which is why it needs an erratta / clarificiation. good luck getting one. but i'm just cynical |
