The Ranged Pin feat essentially allows the person to initiate a grapple at a distance. That being said, assuming you successfully "pin" a caster, they are now in a grapple and hence cannot cast until they break the pin (DC 15 escape artist or strength). Is this a correct understanding of the feat mechanics?

So because a caster has an arrow/bolt/javelin trapping a piece of their clothing to the wall, they now can't cast at all? Even assuming the cinematic effect of trapping one of their arms to the wall wouldn't prevent them from using their other hand to cast spells with somatic components. Adding to the silliness, it's a arrow in most cases, how hard would it be to pull your clothing out from the wall, even if it gets a tear.

Even more interesting, there is no practical limit to how many times you "pin" the target. Let's say I ranged pin a caster 3 times. They will need to succeed 3 opposed checks before they can start casting spells again, right?

Having said all this, my main is an archer, and having the option to effectively shut down a caster at a distance would be awesome, but I think this feat is on the wrong side of Hollywood to be sensible.

I'd ask you to consider two things.

Most archer builds aren't going to really be able get a pin fully "locked down" so it just becomes a trade of actions which is pretty fair in my book. Granted, the archer will probably be stronger but, not so much more.

Sturdy adventuring clothes especially magically imbued ones seem like they would be pretty tough. In my LARP experience, I have been hung up by catching my clothing on things and I am a fairly big strong guy. Strength ends up being the means to escape which also seems about right.

you can cast while pinned DC 20+spell level Concentration check, if it has no somatic and you have the materials in hand.
Protection from normal missiles lokks better!

It's always helpful to mention which book a Feat or other Rule is in when asking a question about it.

Having said all this, my main is an archer, and having the option to effectively shut down a caster at a distance would be awesome, but I think this feat is on the wrong side of Hollywood to be sensible. The caster would need to be in a square adjacent to a wall or object an arrow could penetrate for it to come in to play. I just played an adventure where a PC caster with multiple pearls of power was dishing out heroics to everyone who wanted some feats. Our archer picked Ranged Pin. He got a chance to use it when we were in a large temple complex with walls made of stone (not wood or plaster) so the DM ruled that his arrows couldn't affect a pin to the stone walls unless he used adamantine arrows. So he broke out an adamantine arrow and pinned the caster to the stone wall he was standing next to. It took an adamantine arrow though.

While on the fun side, I don't think the average archer will get enough value. A DM playing a smart wizard or wise cleric or druid would just need to never stand them adjacent (within 5-ft.) to walls or trees to foil this feat, right?

What is a bit too Hollywood though, by a reading of the feat, a PC-race caster in robes behind a tree, getting cover (not total cover), can be pinned by use of this feat by an archer on the other side of the tree. After all, assuming the caster is adjacent to the tree, the tree is only providing cover (not total cover), and the caster is adjacent to an object in which an arrow can be stuck to. THAT is funny, but works according to the rules.

Oh, the feat is in Complete Warrior.
