In the Races Of The Wild, under racial substitution class levels, it says a halfling rogue gets "Ranged Sneak Attacks". Does this mean a HR can get a ranged sneak attack when two other PC's flank an opponent, or the opponent is grappled or otherwise looses their dex bonus? Otherwise it really is just a wash.

Say I take my 3rd level as a HR instead of normal rogue. I get the same bonus to a ranged sneak attack at level 3 normal rogue as I do a HR 2d6.

Please help explain this if you can.

You are correct. The sneak attack is not as good.

It is for all intent and purposes sneak attack, but can only apply to ranged weapons. Thus only when the opponent is flat footed/denied their dex.

So even if you were flanking an opponent you would not get this bonus.

This is balanced by the Thief's luck ability which the Halfling rogue picks up as well. - That is the point of the substitution, not a worse off sneak attack.

Your ranged sneak attack applies whenever you are allowed to deal sneak attack damage as per the rogue ability, meaning only when the opponent is flatfooted or is otherwise denied their dex bonus.

If you take your 3rd level as a HR, you get Ranged Sneak attack + 2d6, but Melee Sneak Attack drops to 1d6. Since it states this augments but does not replace the rogue's Sneak attack ability, I would think this is not as simple as that.

If all you get is Ranged Sneak +1d6 and Melee Sneak drops to 0, there's absolutely no reason to take HR 1 and just take HR 3 when you reach level 3. I think the phrase "augments but not substitute" means that the ranged sneak attack is in addition to the normal sneak attack.

Thus a HR 1 gets Sneak attack 1d6, Ranged Sneak attack 2d6 and Melee sneak attack 0d6. This means at ranged, it's 2d6, in melee it's 0d6 but the class feature allows qualification for PrCs that require at 1d6 sneak, but not 2d6 sneak.

At HR 3, it's 3d6 ranged sneak (based on ability description, you get +1d6 beyond normal sneak attack) and +1d6 melee sneak and 2d6 sneak + the luck ability.

That's my opinion, cos otherwise, there's no reason to take HR1 since you can skip that to do HR3 later
