| Rerednaw04-29-07, 06:14 PM | What are the ways to rapidly identify found magic items? Analyze Dweomer is a level 6 spell and that's a long wait until level 11. If it is a potion, Spellcraft DC25 will work. A bard can do it if he's lucky with bardic knowledge. Use Magic Device can activate blindly. A Diviner with MMSF: Divination could Quicken an Identify at level 7. What else can you use? |
| Britt04-29-07, 06:44 PM | Loremaster. |
| kjenks04-29-07, 07:41 PM | I usually wait until the end of the mod and see what the AR has to say. |
| Gallaway04-29-07, 07:51 PM | subject to table variation a high DC appraise can feasibly do something (you have a lot of experience at identifying and valuing valuable items including magic ones) |
| Maesto04-30-07, 01:05 AM | There's a feat that lets you use appraise to pull it off (CV, I think). Loremaster gets identify as a standard action (EX ability), but needs to be 6th level (minimum of level 13 due to skill reqs). Analyse dweomer works well best. If you're a cleric with the magic domain, you get identify as a 1 hour casting time, but you use a divine focus instead of sloshing out the gold. Also note that you can't quicken identify (can only quicken standard actions) - you can rapid it though to reduce the time it takes to cast. |
| Timlagor04-30-07, 06:48 AM | You can Quicken Full Round spells too. I think he meant to apply Rapid a time or two before Quicken...thought why you'd bother is a mystery. |
| Potato Weasel04-30-07, 07:59 AM | In case you want to loot a body in the middle of combat? |
| Rerednaw04-30-07, 09:10 AM | Normally I just grimace and bear it in a standard mod. In longer two rounders or adapteds, it really stinks to be lugging all this magic gear that may be critical to surviving the BBEG and not knowing what it is. Or burning your own consumables instead of found treasure that goes poof anyway. Forgot you cannot quicken a spell > 1 standard. Cannot rapid it either as it drops hours to hour. Doesn't say what 1 hour drops to. Guess it is just something you put up with until level 11 then. |

| Samwise05-01-07, 02:04 AM | I'm not sure how rapid you'd consider them, and of course they are not particularly available in LG, but . . . The MIC features the Monocle of Perusal, previously appearing in Complete Adventurer, which lets you identify. (1/day in CAd, 3/day in MIC.) Much superior (to me anyway) is the Artificer's Monocle in the MIC, likely from some Eberron book before this, that let's you use detect magic with 5 ranks of Knowledge (arcana) and 1 minute of additional study to gain the effects of an identify spell. It has no daily limit listed. |
| Maesto05-01-07, 03:18 AM | They made it thrice, did they? The monocle of perusal used to be relatively useless unless you wanted to use identify more than 50 days over the course of your career... Thrice a day is starting to sound alright. |
| gomeztoo05-01-07, 11:08 AM | I often just put the things on and see what happens. Can give interesting effects when they turn out to be cursed, of course... |

Gives me time to save $$$. |
| Samwise05-02-07, 12:10 AM | This has got to be hideously expensive...what does it go for? 1,500 gp Why does it cost so little? Apparently because it: 1. Doesn't provide a +5 bonus to a skill (appraise) 2. Requires you to use a spell and be 2nd level to make it work And that's why I consider to much better. The skill bonus isn't that useful, the requirements are marginal, but the cost is puny. Altogether, that works for me. |
| nobodez05-02-07, 03:59 PM | Well, also going from the MIC, if you check the first page of the last chapter (before the appendixes), it says that if you make the spellcraft check by 10 while using detect magic, you can get the use, activation world, and charges (I think that's it, I'm away from my book right now). I used it in my homegame last night, and it really helped getting the equipment into the PCs hands without waiting for the spell. If you'll notice, the dragonfire adept in Dragon Magic can identify at will if they have the right invocation, combine that with the eight-fold decrease in the time of identify between 3e and v.3.5, and I'm sensing that in 4th, identify is just going to be another spell with a one round casting time. |

Just so long as they don't bring the need for a bucket back. |
| Maesto05-02-07, 08:08 PM | I noticed those rules in the MIC. I think it's stupid - if you can identify an item with detect magic, why would anybody ever use analyse dweomer or identify? Wizards easily get huge spellcraft checks, meaning that a detect magic is now an "autoidentify", or an "identify on a take 10". That rule won't fly at my tables; I suspect it will be introduced as a "if the DM will let you use the supplemental rules..." thing, similar to other skill uses found in the splatbooks. |
