| Gumbymoto05-31-07, 04:47 PM | I have a question about the rapid spell feat from the complete divine sourcebook. This feat states: "A rapid spell with a casting time of 1 full round can be cast as a standard action." It then goes on to say that spells with multiple rounds can be cast in 1 full round, spells cast in minutes can be cast in 1 minute, same goes for hours. I am using this spell to enlarge person or summons in a standard action. Some judges have rulled that since the spells for these state a that the casting time is "a round" and not "1 full round" that this feat will not convert the casting time to a standard action. My counter to this is that there are no spells in any source book that I have found with a "1 full round" casting time all I have found is "a round" (PH) and "1 round" (SC). Any help clearing this up would be most appreciated! |

| Mommy was an Orc05-31-07, 05:25 PM | I have a question about the rapid spell feat from the complete divine sourcebook. Wow. That's just a bizarre ruling. How many bizarre rulings can one feat provoke? I'd just point out that any spell in Complete Divine that takes 1 full round to cast, now takes 1 round to cast in Spell Compendium(Brain Spider, Cloudburst, there may be others). The feat also describes that it can affect any spell that takes longer than a standard action to cast. So it does affect a one round spell in some manner. At worst, they should let you cast it as a full round action that doesn't take one round. That's not ideal, but at least you can pull it off in a round. |
| Samwise05-31-07, 07:01 PM | There is no way to clear it up outside a response from CustServ, which few people want to accept. A full round spell is a 1-round spell is a full round action, and this feat reduces the casting time to a standard action. No, it can't be proven by the absolute letter of RAW, but that is the RAI according to R&D. The only way to resolve it before WotC issues errata or a FAQ entry is to play a different character with DMs who don't accept that. |

| JJeff05-31-07, 09:20 PM | I disagree. A 1 round casting time is a Full-round action, but a Full-round casting time is not a 1 round action. A Full-round casting time spell requires you to take a full round action to cast the spell, meaning you lose your move action and can only 5 foot step. The spell comes into effect the round it is cast. A 1 round casting time spell requires you to take a full round action to cast the spell, meaning you lose your move action and can only 5 foot step. But the spell only comes into effect before your initiative the next initiative round. Rapid spell should turn a full-round spell into a std action and a 1 round spell into a full-round IMO |
| Timlagor05-31-07, 09:25 PM | There is no such thing as a "full round casting time spell". The PHB is explicit as the first reply showed. |
| Gumbymoto05-31-07, 09:38 PM | I agree that there is no such thing as a full round spell casting time. The casting times I see are: Swift action Immediate action Standard action 1 round x rounds x min x hours x days I do not see a definition for full round spell casting times that vary from the 1 round description in the PHB. |
| Eric Anondson05-31-07, 10:04 PM | How about a backup source. Complete Mage. It takes some digging but if you read the Arcane Archetypes entry for the summoner, page 27, you'll come across the list of recommended feats for a summoner. Among the list of recommended feats it says: Rapid Spell (Complete Divine): Don't underestimate the value of reducing that 1-round casting time to a standard action. Not only does this let you add in a move action during the round, but it also greatly reduces the chance of your spell being interrupted. I think that clearly reveals how WotC considers Rapid Spell to work with spells with 1 round casting times. The feat does work. |
| Samwise05-31-07, 11:05 PM | There is, technically, a full round casting time spell: It is a spontaneously cast spell modified by a metamagic feat. However, cutting to the chase and digging it out: The text for Quicken Spell (PH pg 98) says: "A spell whose casting time is more than 1 full-round action cannot be quickened." The text for Rapid Spell (CD pg 84) says: My Question: "A spell can be made rapid and quickened only if its original casting time was 1 full round." The text for Cast a Spell (PH pg 143) says: "A spell that takes 1 round to cast is a full-round action." Since there are no spells in the PH with a casting of 1 full-round action as opposed to 1 round, what does this mean? Can you Quicken a spell with a casting time of 1 round? (Like Enlarge Person or Summon Monster.) Or do you have to make it Rapid first? The Reply: A spell that has a casting time of 1 Round takes a Full round action, so any spells that have a casting time of longer than 1 full round action(more than 1 round casting time), spells like commune or unhallow, cannot be quickened. spells with a 1 Round casting time can be, spells like Summon monster or enlarge person. While I didn't specifically ask, if you quicken Enlarge Person and Summon Monster, you must be able to rapid them as well. |
