Rationale behind Cohort re-equipping at level up [Archive] - Wizards Community

Just was looking for the reason behind re-equipping cohorts every level. As it is, the cohort is very underpowered equipment-wise and level wise (always 2 levels minimum lower than the PC leader). It's also an accounting nightmare when you have to discard/sell off equipment to make some arbitrary cap.

As an aside to this, if a cohort purchased a piece of equipment with a favor or Adventure access, is he allowed to repurchase it when forced to rebuild equipment at level-up.

A more logical method would be to allow cohorts to simply keep their equipment if they are above the arbitrary cap for gold per level. This would balance out cohorts and avoid many of the insanely abusive builds designed to overcome the artificial weakness created by lack of equipment. Alternately, letting them use the PC table for character wealth would balance things.

Cohorts are often necessary in areas where a particular character type may not be available. I know I took a cleric cohort with my (now-HL) character so that my groups would always have a healer. Oftentimes, I'd even go to cons and the cohort would be the only cleric available for mid or high level play. Forcing the PC to equip two characters with his character wealth is very inequitable.

As I've stated, either allowing the cohort to keep his character wealth or base the re-equipping on a means other than the NPC wealth table would go a long way towards balancing this inequity.
