| ThaiGQ05-16-07, 06:57 AM | Hey guys...have some n00b questions for you. :P 1. Can you ready to Power Attack for x amount? 2. Can you ready to attack using Combat Expertise for x amount? And if so, when do you get the AC bonus? 3. If you have Hold the Line and ready to attack vs. approach, which one goes off first? What if you trip the opponent with the first attack? Do you still get the second attack? |

That is when your AC bonus would take effect. 3. Are you using a reach weapon? How about your opponent? Ed |

Then, when the attack goes off, I can choose, correct? As for 3., what's would be the difference between whether I use a reach weapon or not? Assuming I've got enough reach to hit the opponent when he charges into range, does it really matter whether I've got reach of 5' or 10'? |

It's perfectly reasonable to double move and declare a power attack amount in order to have it apply to AOOs. In the case of the above you would do whatever move action you wished, declare power attack and then declare your readied action. You could not declare it when the ready goes off. 2. You can ready to attack usng Combat Expertise (as well as fighting defensively) and you would get the AC bonus from it (or them) when you make the attack. 3. It would depend upon the ready trigger I would suspect, though the wording of Hold the Line would also come into play. Tripping the opponent would seem to have little impact unless it prevented one of the triggers from occuring. -James |
| Timlagor05-17-07, 02:17 AM | 1) You actually have the choice of when to declare power attack. When you take a Readied Action it is your turn. It is also your turn when you declare the Readied action. You can even declare your PA when you Ready and then set it again differently when the Ready happens (possibly with an AoO in between). 2) CE doesn't do anything until you make an attack. 3) If both happen simultaneously you can choose: I can't imagine that it would ever actually make any difference which you did first. Tripping certainly doesn't change anything. I doubt JM will be convinced of (1) above so you might want to check with the GM at the table. |

Do you still get the second attack? Hold the line goes counts as an attack of opportunity when the opponent ENTERS your square (normal AoO are upon exit) whereas the held action is just a normal attack. Assuming you have no reach my call on this would be: 1) The hold the line occurs first as he is about to enter the square you threaten. 2) If you trip with the hold the line he falls down outside your threat range as an AoO stops the action (entering your square) that triggered it. 3) If event 2) occurs the held action does not get triggered as he never gets to enter your threatened area. If you do not trip you get both attacks. On the other hand if you have a 10' reach weapon. 1) You can choose to take the hold the line AoO at either 10' or 5' 2) if tripped at 10' he falls outside your reach but if tripped at 5' he falls at 10' distance 3) If you have combat reflexes you can conceivably get 3 swings at him .. one AoO for charging into a threatened square, onother seperate AoO exiting a threatened square and also the held action. However ETV on whether the two movement based AoO are different triggers, |

Especially since if he set the power attack value during the turn he readied his action his next turn has yet to come up when the ready is triggered. -James |
| Timlagor05-17-07, 04:59 AM | You're psychic. Especially since if he set the power attack value during the turn he readied his action his next turn has yet to come up when the ready is triggered. -James Ready is a "special initiative action". It moves your initiative to the time you take your readied action. At that point you are acting (and it is your initiative) It is clearly your turn. The fact that it has not been a whole round since you last had a turn is neither here nor there. EDIT: you also haven't taken an attack yet on that turn. |
| Bold05-17-07, 12:29 PM | 1. Power attack is declared *DURING* your turn, *BEFORE* you've made any attacks. You're using different language than the Power Attack feat. It doesn't say "during your turn", it says, "on your action": On your action, before making attack rolls for a round, you may choose to subtract a number from all melee attack rolls and add the same number to all melee damage rolls. This number may not exceed your base attack bonus. The penalty on attacks and bonus on damage apply until your next turn. This may be up to interpretation and there could be table variation, but I'd allow a player to declare their Power Attack on their readied action ("on your action"), provided it's prior to making any attack rolls ("before making attack rolls for a round"). Note that if you make Attacks of Opportunity before your readied action goes off, you no longer meet the second requirement of Power Attack since you've made attack rolls that round. |
| Timlagor05-18-07, 05:27 AM | The AoO thing doesn't work. You could end up never allowing someone to use PA that way. The round in question goes from the PC's initative count (when the Readied Action goes off) to their next initiative count. Cleary there will be table variation on both aspects so check with your GM. It's unlikely to cause you any problems so long as you know which one your GM favours: you can always set a power attack for a Readied action at some point in the round. |
