| JohnduBois03-26-06, 02:54 AM | I've bought items fully upgraded as often as I could, but now it's finally happened: I've used a favor to upgrade an existing magic item. Specifically, I've added the Death Ward enhancement to an existing +1 mithral buckler. My question is this: How do I properly record such an upgrade on my MIL? Thanks a lot. John |

I always note it on the AR and the MIL. Headband of Intellect +2 - 4,000 GP Upgrade to +4 - 12,000 GP If they have any questions on the MIL, they have the AR number right there to reference. When you start a new MIL for the PC, you can combine them into a single entry. Ed |

John I hate to say this, but I'm about 95% certain death ward can't be added to a shield. I believe it is an "armor only" enhancement. (who has a sorcerer who would like to use the enhancement, but who isn't willing to take ASF to get it) |

(who has a sorcerer who would like to use the enhancement, but who isn't willing to take ASF to get it) The rules aren't terribly explicit. In Complete Arcane, the chapter on magic items lists armors and shields both in "armors" (as evidenced by the fact that the Spiteful Imp, a buckler, is listed under "specific armors"). I looked in the DMG for clarification, and found this on page 218: Fire Resistance: A suit of armor with this ability normally... However, as indicated on Table 7-6, fire resistance can clearly be added to a shield. I figured that unless the enhancement said differently, it could applied to either. |

If not, I'll just correct the AR where I bought it and apply it to my armor instead. |
| solbergb03-28-06, 04:50 PM | In the DMG/SRD, there is an armor table, there is a shield table and there is descriptive text. Generally the text gets right whether it is armor or shield or both. If it doesn't match the tables, by eratta rules, you should probably go with the text. In the case of suppliments, given that many armor things can't be added to shields, and many shield things can't be added to armor, I would assume you would have to go exactly with what the text says. You really don't want some judge disallowing your death ward when you need it most, because you applied it to an item not explicitly allowed by the sourcebook. |
| copper_wyrmling03-28-06, 05:49 PM | I don't know if this helps, but the module A Little Soul Searching (594 Iuz metaregional) gave access to a +1 death ward gnome battle cloak, which is an exotic shield. |
