Could the "death by massive damage" rule be removed, please? I find that it is a terribly anti-climactic way for high level players and the big baddie at the end to kick off.

I hate the massive damage rule, regardless of what side of the screen I'm on. It's so random. When it favors me, I feel like my side didn't earn a victory. When it favors my opponent, I feel like my side just got screwed.

I'll agree on this. Often, massive damage is used by vindictive 'us vs. them' judges that are gunning for PCs. Fort saves are often arbitrary enough in LG; my high level character dropping 5 percent of the time because I took a quarter of my HP (before retirement, my 17th level character had 204 HP) seems even more so.

Anyone disagree?

I do. I think the death by massive damage rule adds in the possibilities that no matter how tough someone is a hard hit can do a number on your nervous system and lay you out flat. Just like a 1 on a save is always a fail. While you may be the most ragingist barbarian with like a 28 con, you're not always going to be able to shrug off that dissintegrate.

Ditto. Take one massive-enough blow and your body may well not handle the trauma. It's realistic. I like it.

I don't see any relevancy in this discussion. Massive damage death is part of Core Rules and as such it should be kept out of LGCS discussion according to guidelines (section 4 to be accurate).

P.S: Massive damage death is a good rule.

Simpi is correct, massive damage is a core rule and there is nothing we can do about it, even though it is an incredible anti-climatic rule and I removed it from my homecampaign fairly recently.

One could implement the optional massive damage based upon size (see DMG page 27). This is not so good for small characters (they only need 40 points) but it does prevent someone doing 50 points to a dragon with 200 and seeing it keel over when it rolls a 1.

Saying this rule is used by vindictive, us vs. them judges is a bit harsh. I've seen this rule go both ways at the table, more often at the baddies than the PCs.

My mistake. I was under the impression that it was a variant rule. I must have been remembering the massive damage variant for size in the DMG.

We've already established that the Circle is willing to change Core Rules by creating a new system for mundane item creation (spending TUs to get gold).

And why is massive damage death a 'good rule'?
