Retraining. On what AR do you pay the costs? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Ok, you play a mod, your PC gets enough XP to level up. If you want to use a retraining option, do you have to do it on the AR that gives you enough XP to level, or is it the first AR AFTER you level?

Britt has stated in several places that you pay the cost on the AR that you level up on. It has also been stated that it is ok to make your choices later, as long as you make them before your next MOD.

I would think its on the AR on which you leveled.

The mod where you gain enough xp to level unfortunately.

My main just made 7 last mod a couple weeks ago, prior to the draft, and I really, really hate my first choice of feat (first character in a long time and first LG character so it was totally wasted). I was really praying retraining would make it in but now I have to wait until level 8 (and blow another 100 gold) to dump that useless feat... :(

Yeah, I have a couple chars who just leveled, including one this weekend who probably would have been tempted to shift something around.

It's just as well. I really should use that cash for magic items instead of indulging in minor tweaks to the build. A level of time to calm down about the changes and get perspective will be good.

I did get the timing right with Burke, and he's probably the one with the most obvious need to do a retrain. (I took Deflect Arrows as his L1 feat, figuring it to be more useful than Combat Reflexes in intro mods, and I wanted both feats at the time). There's a feat that even takes advantage of the fact that he started play with a rank of Kn Arcane and some Perform(acting) ranks for backstory reasons, and that he can make good use of now, and is just the sort of goofy thing he'd apply his Pholtan Monastic training to master.

He'll level in the next adventure he plays AFTER the LGCS goes live.

Likewise the cohort of my character who just leveled will get a chance to retrain one feat, since she wasn't playing in the mod where my char leveled, so her first AR at L9 where she spends cash, including the retraining cash per the latest rules set will be the post-LGCS AR. Cohort leveling is just strange.

So I came out pretty ok on the chars that needed it most, while avoiding temptation on those where it might have been more frivolous tinkering.

I did have a question about retraining.

I have a character that just leveled prior to the draft (and by default the final copy) of the LGCS CY597. I have already filled out the AR (TU's and Gold) but as of yet have not played that character. Can I retrain him ? If the answer is yes I assume I correct the AR and have a GM initial/sign the corrections ?

No, unfortunately. The Retraining rules were not legal when you leveled and the level happens as soon as you get the AR.

Ok good just wanted to make sure. And 3rd level isnt all that far away for him anyhow. And this may help by answering the same question others might be faced with also

Thanks for the answer Britt

No problem. It's in the DC I sent in to WotC last night, as well.
