| clannagh12-10-06, 10:40 PM | The generic ring of feather fall is pretty clear in its operation. It kicks in with a caster level 1 feather fall (which last one round) at the start of a fall. in practical terms it will take D6 off a fall of less than 200 feet and will have no effect for falls from above that height. Players in my parties have developed a clever strategy involving removing the ring at the start of larger falls and quickly putting it back on the last round before they hit the ground. The question is .. should there be any skill test rolled (or reflex save perhaps) to simulate the difficulty of putting the ring back on at just the right time while falling ? |

Since it activates immediately when you fall more than 5 feet, it would activate every round until you hit the ground, essentially covering any fall distance. |

Interesting .. that is not made at all clear in the description. That makes the ring infinitely more useful. |
| trollbill12-11-06, 12:28 PM | Yes, technically what happens is you fall 5 feet, the ring activates and you float down 60 feet. Then you fall 5 feet again, the ring activates again and you float down another 60 feet, etc. So even if you fall 10 miles you won't take any falling damage. Though I can't vouch for motion sickness and starving to death before you hit the bottom. |
| shuntsbe12-12-06, 01:01 AM | Also note that at caster level one, it is limited to one Medium or smaller freefalling object or creature. Therefore, it will not work if you are Large. We almost learned that the hard way before someone realized the limit. |

| trollbill12-12-06, 08:31 PM | What if you wear 2 of them? |
| KShaver12-13-06, 11:53 AM | What if you wear 2 of them? Then the upper half of the centaur floats gracefully while thier ass hits the ground hard. |
| _m_12-19-06, 05:29 PM | note to self. enlarged pcs should try not to fall of high things. |
| Japangirl12-19-06, 07:41 PM | Note to self. Push enlarged (N)PCs off hight places as often as possible, for the giggle factor if nothing else. |

| Britt12-19-06, 09:12 PM | That's exactly how we handle the Rift Canyon, figuring it's a sloped descent. It's a good way to scale traps, too :D |

It's a good way to scale traps, too :D That WAS the Rift Canyon, Mr. Former BK Triad :P I'm so glad my sorcerer decided not to go with her usual method of getting down cliffs, which is indeed jump and featherfall (it gives a nice view on the way down) ;) |
| Britt12-19-06, 09:17 PM | Featherfall works! You just can't do the old "I can't possibly die from 20d6 damage..." trick. Once I realized that no fall could possibly kill my character, even with max damage, it kinda made me realize how stupid that was :) |

Once I realized that no fall could possibly kill my character, even with max damage, it kinda made me realize how stupid that was :) If I remember correctly, we were told that the high winds would buffet us into the walls of the canyon, meaning that we took the same damage even if we featherfalled, but it's been a while since I read the mod. I did like that method of handling the cliff walls: I agree it's silly that a reasonably high-level character can't die from falling from orbit. It was okay anyway: our no-rogues-or-clerics party just flew out from the cliffs and THEN went down. (We had three sorcerers, a sorcerer/spellsword and a fighter at APL 12... my wild mage healed 200HP of damage with wands of Cure Light Wounds and UMD in that mod.) |
| Britt12-19-06, 09:23 PM | If you were able to fly out first, why didn't...you know...fly down? ;) |
| copper_wyrmling12-19-06, 09:24 PM | If you were able to fly out first, why didn't...you know...fly down? ;) Ah, I was unclear. That's exactly what we did. Featherfall did come in very handy later in the mod, though, when we teleported into the air to get away from the gargantuan beasties that were trying to eat us, and then featherfalled, until the initiative of the person with Mass Fly came around. (I love arcane-heavy parties. Also I love Iuz modules.) |
| _m_12-19-06, 10:31 PM | mmm, iuz mods. im fair confident ive played that mod too! our ranger fell off though (involuntarily jumped :D) and had to get caught by a dimension door to not get smooshed :D |
