several questions from a new player... [Archive] - Wizards Community

I'm very experienced with 3.0/3.5, but very new to RPGA/LG. So I have many questions. I've tried searches, rules perusal, and questioning others directly where possible, and I am sure much will have to be learned the hard way over the course of playing; but here are a few questions I would like to ask here...hopefully you'll be able to answer them for me!

> I am signed up for a full-day 3 session intro adventure in the blood on bright sands module. I sent an email asking about the possibility of playing the new races (specifically centaur) and classes, since I am a 'rewards' member but have no special cards, ARs, or other things which may be necessary to qualify. The response I got was;

At the moment, the only way to start one of these new character classes is by playing the first installment of the "Blight on the Bright Sands" series "COR5-06 Blood on Bright Sands".

I have heard rumors that they are going to put those Bright Lands classes as regulars here soon; but definitely don't quote me on that.

Other than that, show up to play with one of those new classes and we will get you rolling.

So he did not address the races (specifically centaur) at all; just classes. I decided not to 'pester' the guy who is probably busy, and instead bring my question here. Can I, a new player with no special cards, ARs, etc., play a centaur character?

> I am also wanting to start a crafting based character. I was, for a while, looking at a battlesmith prestiged dwarf; but from answers I got on the CharOp boards, my concept doesn't mesh well with that PRC. So I am now thinking of just a straight wizard crafter. Where can I find detailed rules on what I can and can't craft, how much it costs in TUs to craft, and so on? One slightly more specific question on this; if I take CWI at 3rd level, can I immediately craft pearls of power for 1st and 2nd level spells (assuming I have enough spare XP and GP)? As far as I can tell, the only requirement is to cast spells of X level; though the DMG also mentions a caster level of 17...impossible in LG. So since I see many posts about crafting/using pearls, I am assuming that caster level is not an LG requirement...?

> With the same wizard character, what are the requirements to summon a familiar; do I simply pay the gold and get any PHB (or brightsands, if using that intro) familiar I want? Are Improved Familiars available if I wait (or lose the original)? If they are, which improved familiars are possible?

> The concept I had for the battlesmith which won't work, was a Bard/Paladin devoted performer. I like that concept and would like to try to go forward with it; however I am unsure about the possibility of changing alignment to make the switch from one class to the other. What are the restrictions, requirements, and feasibilities of making such a switch?

> Are there any bits of advice you'd proffer to me, someone well versed in roleplaying and running 3.0/3.5, but completely new to RPGA/LG?

Thanks!

I'm very experienced with 3.0/3.5, but very new to RPGA/LG.

Welcome to madhouse. :)

Can I, a new player with no special cards, ARs, etc., play a centaur character?

Centaur was set up as sort of a bonus reward. By the rules, you have to have accumulated a sufficient play history with RPGA.

Where can I find detailed rules on what I can and can't craft, how much it costs in TUs to craft, and so on?

In the LGCS. There is a chapter on magic item creation. Repeat after me, "The LGCS is my friend..." ;) The LGCS is available for download http://www.wizards.com/rpga/downloads/LGCS_596.zip .

One slightly more specific question on this; if I take CWI at 3rd level, can I immediately craft pearls of power for 1st and 2nd level spells (assuming I have enough spare XP and GP)? Per the DMG errata, the CL listed is generally not a prereq. In LG, as an exception to regular DnD, it is a prereq. Pearl of Power has specific rules in the LGCS, p. 70. The minimum CL for a 1st level PoP is 5th.

With the same wizard character, what are the requirements to summon a familiar; do I simply pay the gold and get any PHB (or brightsands, if using that intro) familiar I want?

Yep, pay the gold, you have any familiar you are eligible to have.

Are Improved Familiars available if I wait (or lose the original)? If they are, which improved familiars are possible?

LG has no special rules for Improved Familiar. Take the feat, and follow it as it says. The available familiars are listed in the DMG and in CW.

You can either make the alignment switch without fanfare and just change it, make it a focus of role-play, or opt to get an atonement. The latter isn't necessary, but uses the rules mechanics a bit better, IMO. Effectively: no hoops, just choices.

Enjoy.

David is correct on all counts.

If you are indeed a Rewards member, when you've earned 20 points (by playing LG, MoH, LotGR, or whatever other campaigns qualify), you should receive a nice plastic membership card in the mail. If you've got one of these, you can download the special Huelenaear Centaur AR from Wizards' site here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=rpga/hq/poly2a&dcmp=DDPR-0002). And THEN, you may play the centaur in COR5-06 as his very first adventure. That is currently the only way anyone can play a centaur, though it's possible that the opportunity could be offered as a reward on an AR at sometime in the future.

At this point the next mailing won't come until after Dec 31. COR5-06 expires Dec 31. So, it isn't going to be possible to accumulate and receive a card before the mod expires. If OP accumulates enough and prints it out, a recent thread suggested most judges would take the print out as sufficient.

If Centaur isn't in your future, but you want something off the beaten path, consider an Asherati.

Copies of the Bright Sands source book and the special centaur AR are here:

http://egor.walledcity.ca/turbine/page/downloads.html

As stated above, technically you need to have been sent the plastic RPGA card as proof of 20 accumulated reward points to use the special AR.

In practice, if you print out your rewards listing showing 20 points bulit up, most GM's will be happy enough to accept that.

just to clarify a little more. i have the improved familiar feat, and due to only being alowed to take familiars on the dmg imp familiar list, (the primary one, not the subtype option one) and needing compatible alignment, the best familiar (in fact, almost the only familiar, one of basically 3 familiars, a celestial, and a shocker lizard being the other 2) is the psuedo dragon.

of course, there is one person with a shadow elemental familiar... but you need a different feat for that.

As pointed out already, you can select from the improved familiar list in Complete Warrior, not just the DMG.

yeah, but its a bit of a pain, as i was sort of getting a 'full caster' vibe from him, and to get a bab high enough for a dect 7/7 pet, youd need spellsword eldritch knoght style thing, and if your doing it all for the familiar, id say druid is a better option for a pet.
