Lightblade 11-28-06, 10:12 AM	Standard PHB equipment has guidelines stating how much equipment weights. (1/2 for weapons and armor, 1/4 for adventuring gear). For some wonderous items, such as gauntlets of ogre power, it makes sense to have a 1/2 weight item that fits small sized characters. For other items, it seems like there should only be one size. (Metamagic rods for instance; if there were lighter ones, why wouldn't every 6 str grey elf wizard carry those instead?). My quandry is this: what should I do about extradimensional storage spaces? They're backpacks, sacks, and quivers, so I feel they ought to be sized for small characters. However, saying they weigh less than their medium counterparts and have the same storage capacity is very fishy. Right now i'm treating them as small sized, but with the standard weight. Anyone have any thoughts on the issue?

I play a gnome bard as my primary LG character, and I'm very meticulous in tracking encumbrance, so yeah, I've also had headaches trying to figure out the weights of wondrous items for small PCs. My criteria are very similar to yours: basically, if the wondrous item is an article of clothing, or if it is similar to something else in the PHB that weighs less for small PCs (e.g. magical musical instruments, since non-magical ones in the PHB are quarter-weight for small creatures), then I reduce the weight. But for things like rods & staves, no. For extra-dimensional spaces, however, my thinking is that the weight of the item is proportionate to the 'size' of the extra-dimensional space. The footnote on the equipment lists in the PHB states "1: These items weigh one-quarter this amount when made for Small characters. Containers for Small characters also carry one-quarter the normal amount." So, for example, a Heward's Handy Haversack weighs 5 lbs., but has a holding capacity of 12 cubic feet/120 lbs. If we were to shrink that for a small creature, it would weigh 1.25 lbs., and hold 3 cubic feet/30 lbs. This is just way too confusing (not to mention highly subject to DM interpretation), so my policy is to just stick with the standard weight - which is why my gnome walks around with a 5 lbs. HHH (must've been shoddy craftsmanship on the part of the crafter :D ).
