Snowshoes (SPC) and magic Ice Effects [Archive] - Wizards Community

10-29-07, 02:16 PM I have a character with the spell snowshoes (SPC) active (+10 land speed enchament, no balance checks required or hinderance when crossing ice and snow) entering an area with a magic ice effect (from Frostburn, don't have the book on me, cleric 1 spell which creates an 20ft square area of magic ice): would the character w/ snowshoes be forced to make a balance check?

Also, does the land movement enhancment of snow shoes apply when not travelling across ice and snow?

The spell description is pretty ambiguous, however to avoid rendering Longstrider obsolete I would suggest that it doesn't. Otherwise, the spell does everything Longstrider does, for the same amount of time, PLUS has all the extra goodies for snow and ice. (Not to mention it can be cast on others, not just yourself.)

As written (not as it was intended) the spell is longstrider + no slip and slide on ice/snow; which is the only reason my cleric bought mass snowshoes... +10 land speed for the party is pretty spiffy (gnome cleric moving 40 (celerity + snowshoes) is useful...)

10-30-07, 12:06 AM The spell just gives you a bonus 10 feet of movement, it doens't say anything about only applying on ice or snow. It's a very solid spell.

Depends on what you think they meant by and...
"The affected creature gains a 10-foot enhancement bonus to speed and is not required to make a Balance check or Reflex save to walk on ice and snow without slipping and falling, etc..."

I think the sentence means both benefits apply on ice and snow, and despite moving faster, you don't have to worry about slipping or falling.

Well, I'm looking at the spell description and while I think the RAI was probably on ice and snow, I'm not sure that's really what the RAW says.

It is ambigious. And that's more than enough to look to the RAI, especially when one spell does everything another spell does(and you probably know when you're casting Snowshoes)

That one sentence is only marginally ambiguous. The rest of the spell description is very clear about only affecting the caster on snow.

But if you look at Longstrider, it's the same level as Snowshoes (level 1), and it would to LESS if the Snowshoes bonus to land speed applied all the time. I know we've gotten some powerful spells from the spell compendium, but they're not so powerful that they completely replace the PHB spells that have similar effects..

Also, the picture below the actual spell has a caption that states that the snowshoes spell gives the druid an advantage on snow and ice. I know it's not the spell description, but still, that's a pretty big sign.
