Ok, Sonic Weapon is a second level bard spell that adds 1d6 sonic damage to a weapon.

Sonic Might from Lyric Thaumaturge lets you expend a bardic music attempt to add 1d6 per spell level of sonic damage to any spell with the sonic descriptor.

Does Sonic Weapon with Sonic Might make the weapon do 3d6 damage per swing?

I would say (without having checked the LThaum text) that it didn't work: using the ability would do 2d6 Sonic damage to the weapon you were casting the spell on.

Actually, I would think that Tim may have a point.

Lyric Thaumaturge's Sonic Might adds the damage to the spell, not the effect of the spell.

Thus Sonic Weapon's target, the weapon, takes the damage. The problem is the TARGET of the spell would be the receipient of the extra damage since it is the SPELL that would deal 2d6 more point of damage, not the effect of the spell on the target.

If you say that the weapon would deal 2d6 more points of damage, that would mean that if a Lyric Thaumaturge casted Shout and Sonic Might-ed it, the people that takes the damage from the Shout spell would now do 2d6 more sonic damage to anyone they hit. THAT would be a completely illogical conclusion.

And since it says it adds "1d6 points of damage to any spell", not "extra damage", it can be used with previously non damaging spells.

So yeah, the target of the spell would take 2d6 sonic damage...

Haferka, maybe you should read it before throwing out personal insults at someone (or maybe not throw out personal insults at all)...

As I said before, I was NOT saying it worked...

I was saying.. read the rules before throwing out a ruling. It really agrivates people when somebody throws out their opinion on something without knowing the facts..

.. In many cases these are the same people that come back later (after reading the rules) with a completly different take on the situation.

The OP included a description of the ability but not a reference.

From the description I could make a fairly safe deduction but included the caveat because I hadn't looked up the rule and precise wording can make a difference.

If you don't like it then kindly keep it to yourself and ignore the post.

Sounds like you are a complete idiot.

It amazes me how quickly people jump to personal attacks/insults through the anonymity of the internet. To me, it says way more about the person who posted the insult than it does about the subject of the insult.

You are right.

I apologize.

I would not have said something like that in person.

Alright.. forgiven.

So we are all in agreement that Sonic Might damages the target in question?

I don't know I havent read it.. lol :)

"Sonic Might (Sp): Beginning at 5th level you can expend a use of bardic music to add 1d6 points of sonic damage per spell level to any spell with the sonic descriptor."

It's pretty vague about "how" it adds the damage, and I would assume that is intentional. It would be a DM call every time, depending on the spell.

Personally, with the sonic weapon example especially, I think it's impossible to call, because sonic might doesn't say it does that damage to the target of the spell, so you can't really rule that the weapon targeted by sonic weapon would take the damage, but at the same time it doesn't specifically say it increases the damage a spell deals either, so it would be an assumption that it would work that way either. I think the most sensible ruling that keeps as close to both the spirit and the letter of the rules would be to handle it similar to augment healing and vigor spells. Sonic Might would add 2d6 damage to the first successful attack with a Sonic Weapon. That way all sonic spells would only benefit from the extra damage once per casting just like all healing spells only benefit from the extra healing of augment healing once per casting.

I like it. Sounds like a good ruling.
