Spell clarification - Freedom of Movement [Archive] - Wizards Community

09-21-06, 09:32 PM My question that came up in a recent game was whether or not the spell Freedom of Movement would prevent Sovereign glue or tanglefoot bags from gluing you in one place. It says in the description that it negates all grapple checks automatically and I feel thats very similar to the glue effect in many ways. What say you?

09-21-06, 09:38 PM IMHO, glues of various kinds would not affect you while you're under the effects of FoM.

The first paragraph of the spell states, "This spell enables you or a creature you touch to move and attack normally for the duration of the spell, even under the influence of magic that usually impedes movement, such as paralysis, solid fog, slow, and web."

To me, that phrasing implies that there must be things that are not magic that FoM applies to, and if not things like sovereign glue and tanglefoot bags, then what?

09-22-06, 11:34 AM The primary focus of the sentence is that Freedom of Movement allows you to move and attack normally during the duration of the spell. The second segment expands the power of the spell rather than retracts it. Freedom of Movement is probably overpowered, but so are grapple checks of most creatures that would bother grappling.

Also note that Travel domain, since Kelanen seems to be the deity of choice these days is not quite as powerful as 'freedom of movement' since it only mentions magical effects and spells. Grappling still works normally against them. I once made a mistake like that and allowed priest of Kelanen to flee grapple.

To give another example, if your movement is restricted because of rough terrain, Freedom of Movement doesn't allow you to move at full speed.
