Divine and with "Anyspell" Arcane... Since Restricted items can still be used "behind the scenes" this could still be used as a plot element, but I dont want to EVER see it... |
| Maesto02-03-06, 08:35 AM | I don't think it's all that bad - it's got a 15 minutes period to have it sink in, and you need a spellbook or scroll with it on hand. It just needs to be clarified. |

YES. this allows a sorcerer to "prepare" ANY arcane spell. What I REALLY dont want to see is an NPC archivist using ANYSPELL to cast litterally ANY combination of spells.. be they divine or arcane. It just makes us PCs look bad. And on the off chance that some region grants access to the spell domain (which could be picked up as one of the many bonus domains.. that several classes grant)... The cleric with the ability to cast ALL of the lower level arcane spells... just eliminated the need for an arcane caster... the cleric would have ALL the cool arcane utility spells. and depending on her choices for other domains, could still cast some nasty offensive spells. I dont like the spells, becouse they blur the line between arcane & divine casters... that is what the mystic theurge class is for.. and it actually requires the player to trade higher level spells for the ability to cast both divine & arcane. The Spell domain allows the divine caster to just gain a TON of arcane spells. |

(B) you have to have a source (scroll or spellbook) on hand for the spell. If you use a scroll, it is erased. (C) the casting time is 15 minutes. (D) unless you're a Wizard or a Wizard PRC, you can't even MAKE a spellbook, so all you have access to is the spellbooks you've acquired or else the party Wizard's book (which means you still need a party wizard). Okay, so let's look at this realistically. A Sorceror goes through all the rigamarole to get the Spell domain. They've spent 8 cross-class skill points on Knowledge (Religion) to get the 4 ranks. They've spent 4 ranks on Spellcraft. They've neglected their Concentration skill and any other skill in the process. AND they've somehow found a deity that grants this domain. They can now spend all their 3rd-level slots (taking 15 minutes to prepare each one, so 1:45 total if they used them all) to prepare FIRST and SECOND level arcane spells. They can now eventually spend all their 6th-level slots (same time constraint) to memorize spells of up to 5th level. If they're sorcerors, they might as well just cast from the bloody scrolls, or buy a wand! If they've got access to spellbooks, fine - but spellbooks are hard to come by. And since they're a Sorceror, they don't have the class ability to make their own. I don't see what the problem is. You just wasted all your 3rd level slots to memorize 2nd level spells, and you took almost twice as long as a Wizard would have. In other words, you just turned a 9th level sorceror into the equivalent of a 6th level (or less) wizard by stripping out most of his 3rd level spells. Again, I really, really, REALLY don't see where you're coming from. |

That last one is the big problem - unless there's a deity who grants the domain(and there isn't at the moment), you can't take it. And at that point, the problem isn't Sorcerers, it is Clerics... |
| haferka02-03-06, 02:42 PM | You are corect in that the domain is not CURRENTLY a problem, becouse no diety grants it. But, In the event that someone gets a cert for some lost forgotten diety.. which grants the domain... and thus the spells... The REAL problem at the moment... is the Combination of Archivist and Anyspell. All an author needs to do is add the spell to the archivists know spells and give them an arcane spellbook to cast from. Now that archivist can cast ALL of the arcane spells that the author wants them to have. NOT cool. I am AFRAID of the broken spell combos that can be cast. I havn't thought of any.. but im sure some munchkin author will think of something. |
| Mortepierre02-03-06, 03:36 PM | So, let me get this straight.. You're afraid some author is going to use a new class from HH for one of his NPC, give him a one-time access to a god which doesn't exist so that he can get Anyspell, and then - somehow - inflict a TPK on the players by being able to cast any arcane spell? The odds of that happening must be about as high as a Red Wizard of Thay finding his way into GH and taking over the SB just because they happen to wear the same color... :looloo: |
