Hi guys! I'm thinking of making a Spellsword, and I have a question about their Channel Spell ability. It is a spell-like ability, which means it provokes an attack of opportunity unless used "on the defensive", which requires a concentration check. Normally, the concentration check DC would be based on the spell level of the spell that a spell-like ability duplicates, but there is no Channel Spell spell. So, what's the equivalent spell level of Channel Spell? I have submitted the same question to "Ask Wizards", but since they get an awful lot of questions I am not hopeful mine will be answered.

My take on it is this: You have to be able to cast second level spells to get into the Spellsword prestige class. You gain the ability to use Channel Spell at 4th level, by which point you have gained 2 additional caster levels from the prestige class, meaning you could now cast a third level spell. Thus, I would say Channel Spell is equivalent to a third level spell, making the concentration check DC for using it "on the defensive" (15 + 3 =) 18.

It's a spell-like ability that takes a move action. You therefore need to make a concentration check to pull it off, or you provoke an attack of opportunity. See page 315 of the MM for spell like ability info. Since there is no concentration DC given, it will be 15 + spell level, as per usual to pull it off. Given that there is no spell level given, I'd take it as zeroth level.

There may be something in the errata on this, but that's just my interpretation =) (not nescessarily correct ;-)

Wow, you're even more lenient than me. :) I fear some DM's may think it reasonable to use the level of the spell channeled to determine the DC, however. That's why I'm hoping someone official-sounding will post here and clear it all up.

My guess is that the concentration DC is the same as to cast the spell you are channeling into the sword. So if you channel a magic missile into the sword, it's DC 16, but if you channel an enervation into it it's DC 19. It seems to make sense that way, anyways. Absent an official post, that's what I would rule anyways.
