Standing up as a Free Action [Archive] - Wizards Community

I'm just trying to find out what exactly is the ruling. I know standing up normally takes up a move action which provokes an attack of opportunity. I also know that almost every free action does not provoke an attack of opportunity (actually can't think of one that does provoke off the top of my head). So if I have the prone attack feat which allows me to stand up as a free action do I provoke an attack of opportunity or not?

While I'm at it I do have one more thing I want to verify. If I'm making a full attack on my turn and end up getting tripped after my first attack (refuse to drop weapon and lose opposed check), I do still get to complete any remaining attacks I have left (including trips), right?

I really appreciate the help as I have a game tomorrow which will be directly affected by what I find out. Thanks!

My opinion:

The FAQ (p. 35 of the 10/19/07 edition) addresses the question about standing a free action using a DC 35 Tumble check. It provokes an AoO. Since the Prone Attack description does not say that standing doesn't provoke, and the PHB says standing does provoke, I'd expect to take AoO's using that feat.

(By the way, the PHB says that free actions "rarely" provoke AoO's. The example mentioned in table 8-2 is preparing bulky spell components, at the DMs discretion.)

I don't see any reason to deny a character iterative attacks after they're tripped.

I consider the FAQ ruling to be one of it's more stupid ones.
Prone Fighting imo removes the AoO but you should expect variation if it isn't explicit.

You do indeed get to complete your attack sequence when tripped (though at -4 to hit).

I agree that using Prone Attack to stand up still provokes attacks of opportunity. The feat (from Complete Warrior) does not suggest in any way that a character using it to stand is immune to attacks of opportunity. Standing characters do benefit from the negation of the bonus to attack them. Sounds like a good compromise, to me.

And yes, a character may certainly make an iterative attack if tripped.

Prone Attack lets you attack while prone with no penalty. It also negates the normal melee bonus others have to attack you (and presumably leaves the advantage against ranged attacks).

So, if you're being threatened, why not just stay prone and attack from there?

Oh, that one's easy. Because you want to run, run away! ;-)

..or 5' step

I'll just point out that I asked about attacking from prone. Not running or 5' stepping away. Both of which still require standing, and which Prone Attack doesn't help, as discussed above.

You asked for reasons to stand up, they gave you a couple. Here's another one: you can't reach the person threatening you (ie. he has a reach weapon bigger than yours) and thus you have to move to get in attack range. Or you could want to bull rush the guy, something that can't be done while prone.

Standing up is a move action that's why it causes an AOO. If it were free you could do it and make a make a charge or some other full round action. Also you can only take a five foot step after standing the other option is crawling at one quarter speed.

Crawling provokes. When you're prone you're hosed. That is why being able to stand up without provoking is so great.

Oh well then it must have been house rule or something. If push comes to shove I've got a Cape of the Montebank why be prone and next to a monk when I can bamf it and apear any where on a map.

Well presumably he'd appear somewhere that standing up was less problematic.

Out of the enemy's reach...

Sure, but he'd still need to take the move action the following round to do so.
