Can a creature who is telepathic convey a Bard Song (Inspire Courage - Vocal only) or Marshall Aura through Telepathy?

To me, it seems that a Marshall can, because the Aura ability is an Extraordinary ability that grants a Circumstance bonus. The marshall is just instructing his companions how to be better at something.

The Bard part, however, is a little more problematic. Inspire Courage is a Supernatural ability that grants a Morale bonus. Of course, if the Bard uses Perform (Any Non-Vocal) for this ability, it wouldn't work. If the Bard were to use Perform (Vocal), however, I think it should work.

To get the bonus you must be able to hear the bard.

Telepathy is a form of communication that you can hear. I would allow it for the marshall. (its about being directed).

As for Bardic abilities, I wouldn't allow it, as one could argue telepathy is interpreted by the receiver's mind, and as such bardic skill and emphasis may be lost - the very foundation of their powers.

I would think that the bard's power is in the song itself, and telepathy would only convey the words..

But I think that we should stick to the general rule of sticking to the standard method, else people may start trying to argue that telepathy can do a lot more things like trying to cast a verbal spell through telepathy, saying that a creature with telepathy counts as a creature with a Helm of Telepathy for Phan Killer usage etc.

Because of the fact that Bards can't use silent spell on any of their spells, it suggests that all bard abilities make some noise. Even the metamagic feats that allow you to disguise your spellcasting require you to make some noise.

No, you don't hear telepathy.

"Hearing" is the vibrations in air molecules being transmitted by the tympanum to the ossicles and sensed by the cochlea.

Bard song is a sonic effect. It explicitly doesn't work in silence, it doesn't work in a vaccum...

Telepathy is communication, not hearing.

Hmm... there goes my second idea of using Inspire Competence to help the Rogue Move Silently via Telepathy...:)

But what about the Marshall Aura?

But what about the Marshall Aura?

Your allies have to be able to hear you, so I would say no.

However, that's implicit (though I think it's the intent). The ability says they have to be able to hear, not that they actually gain the ability by hearing you (unlike Bardic music).

That's an awfully fine hair to split though, and the intent seems clear, at least to my eyes...

So what noise are marshalls constantly making?

I sort of envision marshalls as a sort of "battle coach" giving tips and reminders before and as you are performing your effected actions. "Stay on the balls of your feet!", "check your sides!", "stay in formation!", "big smiles, everyone!" and etc.

Not sure how that effects the question of being able to hear vs. making a sound debate but, I think telepathy would work.

A marshall gets their own bonus if silenced. This would imply that knowing what the marshall is trying to convey is more important than actually hearing them shout orders.

Marshall - yes. All the aura is from a flavor standpoint is passing information. Telepathy should work fine for that.

Bard - no Why would vocal performance be different from an instrument? Singing or oratory still uses your body as the musical instrument. It isn't the information in the song that does the effects, it's the music.

Telepathy != music. Take subsonics if you want a subtle bard.

Technically speaking neither, though I would allow it with Marshals.

I agree with this. Marshall Aura is to do with instructions, Bardic abilities are to do with magical music/oratory, and you need tone etc to convey it.
