What does Trained For War actually constitute (eg does it include the ability to wear barding etc) and how many tricks does it take etc. Those who use it will be able to add to the areas they were finding variation on.... | DarkKnight02-01-06, 10:34 PM | Any clarification on the "Trained for War" and other tricks that can be taught to animals would be a GREAT thing for this document. The Handle Animal skill and the whole training section in the PHB seam a little lean. |
| gninja02-01-06, 10:39 PM | The generally accepted view is that it takes the attack trick twice to be trained for war. And that it provides armor proficiency in all types of armor. It would be nice to have it spelled out, in the LGCS though. Additionally, what happens for an animal with an intelligence higher than 3? Does a paladin's mount retain it's "trained for war" status, when it no longer qualifies for tricks, or does it then need to start picking up armor proficiency feats? How about an Arcane Hierophant's Familiar Companion? |

It definitely needs to be spelt out, however. As it stands, it is a meaningless phrase with no support in the rules. Cheers! |

I have a celestial animal companion and if taking 10 is allowed in training, my score is 27, high enough to teach it about any trick. So that's why I would need exact ruling on can I ride it to battle, can it wear barding, etc. Thanks. S.H, the guy from Naerie |
| kjenks02-02-06, 10:01 AM | I propose the following new paragraphs for page 40, under Tricks: === In LIVING GREYHAWK, an animal is considered to be "trained for war" if it has the Attack trick. Per the MM glossary description of the animal type, this means that such an animal is proficient in armor/barding. A mount can be commanded to attack using the Ride skill, Control Mount in Battle task. If the mount is either an animal with the attack trick or a magical beast, you do not need to roll a Ride check and this task does not require an action. === Alternatively, instead of just the attack trick, we could require the animal to have either the Combat Riding or Fighting packages from Handle Animal/Train an Animal for a Purpose. If we make this change, we should allow players a one-time change to their animals' trick so they can adjust to the "new" rules. |
| redgamer02-02-06, 10:30 AM | I think animals trained for war should be proficient with light barding. Barded animal companions already have AC high enough to make the fighters envious. We don't need them wearing full plate. |
