The list of animal companion tricks is on page 74 of the Player’s Handbook v.3.5 under Handle Animal. Special tricks (ones not listed in the PHB) are only allowed by way of campaign or regional documentation. The ability to train animals with tricks from other sources (Complete Adventurer, etc.) should be core access and not require regional documentation. The tricks from these additional sources are flavor enhancements to the game. This is one more thing that the Regional Triads need to consider that affects such a small number of players that it's really not worth their time to write it in to certs. -Swiftbrook |

The optional skills are generally at DM's option. If the alternate training tricks are core access, they are then at DM's option. If they come with regional documentation, they aren't. Under the draft rule (which is the same as 4.2), the PC needs access, and then trains the critter, with TUs spent. This provides an invenstment in the critter, and makes people less willing to give them up as ablative hit points. That compaign access may be something that is still available through MetaOrgs without building it into a regional mod; I would suggest that the MetaOrgs is where the access belongs. David |
| Swiftbrook02-02-06, 07:32 PM | Has anyone seen access to any Handle Animal tricks outside the PHB? If so, please give examples (without spoilers). Like '???????' MetaOrg, or "a Cor mod" or "a ??? regional mod". Thanks -Swiftbrook |

You, my friend, have obviously never been to Ket! In our region, doing lethal damage to a citizen (or a horse) is a big no-no, whether it is you or your animal. Being able to do non-lethal, or assist attacks, from an animal, would totally rock in Ket. That being said, I have yet to see any access to those tricks myself, and I have played a great deal of Ket mods. So my feeling is that either the tricks should be core (and I can understand if they want to limit the access), or they should be given out with a little bit more frequency. The Red Knight of Ket |
