jokem 03-24-06, 05:02 PM	Two questions, both having to do with a triggered action. A cleric tries to cast a spell and an opposing wizard casts Magic Missile in an attempt to interrupt it as a triggered action. Does each missile require a seperate concentration check, or do all the missiles damage require one big concentration check? I presume since the missiles all go off at once it is one big check, but it is not absolutely clear. A Barbarian has a Wizard cornered where the Wizard cannot take a 5 foot step to back out of trouble. Instead of attacking and counting on an attack of opportunity to interrupt the Wizards spell, the Barbarian opts for a triggered action. Can the Wizard try casting defensively to deny the Barbarian the chance to interrupt the spell, or does that only work to deny an attack of opportunity?
kenobi65 03-24-06, 06:41 PM	Well, first, there's technically no such thing as a "triggered action." I think you're referring to "readied actions." In either case, the "attacker" would, on his initiative, say something like, "I ready {action X}, to go off if the enemy wizard starts casting a spell." Read the section of the PHB on "Ready" (p. 160). In the first case (a readied Magic Missile), I'd argue that it's one damage source (a single spell), but you might get other opinions. In the second case, casting on the defensive would save the wizard from suffering an Attack of Opportunity from the barbarian, but he'd still have to make a Concentration check to cast defensively. The barbarian's readied attack would go off when the wizard starts casting (casting defensively doesn't negate the readied action), and the wizard would have to make a *second* Concentration check if he took damage from the barbarian's readied attack.
