You default first to the wizard/sorcerer version then the cleric version. I've never thought about saving a smite for a coup, but why not? It should certainly be overkill though (unless it's your celestial improved cat familiar against a held opponent). -James |

(does it actually matter?)I only have the SRD at the moment, but if you look in the matching section in the back of the MM (p.315), it should say something along the lines of: Some spell-like abilities duplicate spells that work differently when cast by characters of different classes. A monster's spell-like abilities are presumed to be the sorcerer/wizard versions. If the spell in question is not a sorcerer/wizard spell, then default to cleric, druid, bard, paladin, and ranger, in that order. |
