Weapon and Torch style possibilities [Archive] - Wizards Community

This situation arose today in a home game. A character with the "Weapon and Torch Style" feat asked if they could use a quarterstaff (with a lantern mounted on one end) with the style... after some deliberation, the DM decided that this was not so very different from the spirit of the original feat and allowed it, stating the following...

1) The character was still using both hands, even though the "weapon" is one end of a double weapon, and could only do damage with a single end.

2) The attack roll would be made with the primary attack rating of a double weapon (meaning the character took "Two-Weapon Fighting" feat to make it worthwhile).

3) The lantern would not cause fire damage due to the flame being contained, unless the character wanted the lantern to smash (which he didn't).

What do the good people think... fair or not?

Is it a viable ruling for Greyhawk Ruins? (I would sure like to try it as I have
the same mini, my friend was using)

If so, would we see lots of "Weapon and Torch Style" wizards and sorcerers?... well... before they retrained for better spellcasting...

And what about Monks? Unarmed in one hand, Torch in the other... very nice for the "decisive strike" alternate class ability in PH2.

What do you think?

How about a druid or fire cleric who has cast produce flame for their off-hand and wield their weapon of choice in their primary hand?

The feat specifies a one-handed melee weapon.
A quarterstaff is not a one-handed melee weapon.

The feat notes some alternative light sources, and does not include produce flame.
Again, produce flame is not a light source that can be used with the feat.
