Two Questions:

1) If I gain access (lower section of AR) to a Greater Weapon Crystal (truedeath in this case), can I purchase the least or lesser instead? ( I don't think so, just asking)

2) If I gain access (lower section of AR) to a Greater Weapon Crystal, can I craft a least or lesser instead of the greater crystal if I have the proper feats and spells?

Thanks,

I'm pretty sure the answer to both those questions is no, but it might be something worth asking in the Q&A Thread.

I don't think there is any question at all.

Access to flaming burst doesn't give you access to flaming - not for crafting and not for purchase

Access to a pearl of power 3 doesn't give access to pearl of power 1.

Access to a greater rod of empower doesn't give access to the rod of empower or lesser rod of empower.

Back before +N items were open access, a +3 flailon the AR didn't give you access to a +2 flail.

You get what you get. No more, no less. With respect to the crystals I know that some content editors feel none of the least crystals should ever make it into the wild, but I know some have snuck in already.

Except:
You can craft weapon and armor enchantments if you have had access to purchase any item that has those enchantments from the Items Found section of any AR.
So if I find a +1 Flaming, Sacred, Holy, Longsword then I can add the Flaming enchantment to my own +1 Undead Bane Greatsword.

So to me, the question is: "is a weapon crystal a weapon enhancement?" Weapon crystals require Craft Arms and Armor, but are you adding an enhancement when you go from a least to a lesser crystal.

I tend to lean towards a Greater crystal is a crystal with three separate enanchements which you must add in order (like +1, flaming then flaming burst to a sword).

But as solbergb said, access to flaming burst does not give you access to flaming. In the same vien access to a greater X crystal does not give you access/crafting access to a lesser or least version.

Setting aside LG rules for a moment...logically, I agree with you. However, as several have noted, there's precedent in LG (the flaming burst vs. flaming example) to say it doesn't work that way in LG.

Yeah, there are some that definitely change the scope of the game - I've got an Iron Ward Diamond(least), 3 Least Crystals of Return, and a Lesser Crystal of Revelation. They really influence combat in a way that is not typical of 2400 gold of items at 11th.

It isn't quite the same thing as having the Quickdraw feat, but the 3 Least Crystals act that way - if I had wide access to different crystals, that probably wouldn't be as true as I'd be more interested in using specific crystals for specific situations.

But yes, having one shouldn't give access to a lesser version of it - having a Rod of Empower access doesn't give you access to Lesser Rod of Empower...

My Iron Ward Diamond might influence combat more if I could ever remember that I own one ;) I'd love least crystals of return - I have one from Undermountain (it makes my new sacred scabbard even better), but more would be nice (as I may buy multiple sacred scabbards). Sadly I saw the Greater Truedeath crystal with my sorcerer, rather than my crit-happy dervish, but oh well.

I agree with everyone else on access to greater crystals not giving you access to the lesser versions.

With the synergy enhancements in the MIC, access is somewhat blurred. If you have access to acidic burst, and can craft it, how can you not also have access to corrosive which you would have to craft the item? However, the crystals are more like pearls of power. You've learned how to make the crystal using some base amount of power and not less or more.

Rethought my answer. No comment at this time.

While this is true, MIC isn't an LG book (and at this stage I doubt it ever will be) ..but if you have access to acidic burst citing the MIC you do have an argument that might stick.
