When does retraining happen? [Archive] - Wizards Community

GreatSiron, that means you have to qualify for the class first, but class benefits (such as a bonus feat) don't come into effect till after.

So can retrain a weapon focus, then take fighter 4 and weapon spec for example.

So is class choice the only thing you have to do before you do the retraining option? Can you retrain a previous feat selection into a prereq for a prestige class just before you take it? ie, going to 6th level, retrain 3rd level feat to Skill Focus: Handle Animal, and take Beastmaster at 6th?

If that's not valid, is it valid to go to fighter 4 and switch the fighter 2 feat to Weapon Focus just before taking that level, making Weapon Specialization an option?

I don't know if there should be a difference between the two, but I'd like a clear answer. It seems that planning for retraining is becoming a big part of the character creation process - it is for me, anyway.

06-12-07, 12:28 AM You can't do #1; you can do #2. You have to select your class first and you must qualify for a class to select that class. After selecting a valid class, you then perform your Retraining, followed by all the normal leveling steps.

06-12-07, 12:34 AM Oh well, I guess CWI will have to wait another lvl. (I got access to Mage of the Arcane Order on an AR, and next lvl up I have to retrain into a metamagic feat AND take Cooroprative Spell as my 6th lvl feat)
