When is the "Level up" Benefit chosen? [Archive] - Wizards Community

If a character gained a level on an AR which is dated 4 days prior to the official adoption of the new 597 rules, but doesn't play until today, 10 days after the new 597 rules, may that PC choose feats/spells/benefits from the new 597 rules for the level up?

The underlying question is must you choose feats/etc available on the day you level up, or do you choose them in the days between sessions?

Usually I go away and do my work/research to see where the character is going and what I'd like to do next before the next session, but I'm not sure which rules to follow in this case.

Frankly, I would like to be able to choose a newly available feat, but I don't want to cheat or be seen as cheating.

Thanks for the help!

No. It's clarified somewhere on the boards, and possibly in the Dispel Confusion.

For practical reasons, you don't have to choose until the start of your next game after levelling up, but you can only choose things which were available at the end of the game you levelled.

As some people have noted, this could cause issues for people who haven't played a particular character for a few years, but generally it works ok.

Although, under this interpretation of how to level up, you could take a feat that has been closed (DMM, DSP), then you would get to retrain it for free, since it is now invalid.

The DMM/DSP retrain isn't restricted to items that were in the campaign prior to the new LGCS?

Hmmm... it may be restricted to the old LGCS... never thought that part through....

This doesn't affect any of my characters anyway; the only one who leveled up in that time was my RHoD character, and I am not changing his direction.

No, the retrain because something is closed includes the new rules options opened at the time the option you have is closed.

The current druid rebuild is restricted to the pre-597 rules options, though.

I asked about this. Britt said that the character levels immediately upon reciving the AR, so even if you don't play the character for a while, you still have to use the rules that were in effect at the time you received your AR.

(I had a character level on his last AR and I haven't played him yet. I wasn't going to change him, but I asked out of curiosity.)

I thought that was the intent in last years LGCS, but it was worded to allow you to levelup anytime before the next game. In this years LGCS it is clear you have to levelup immediately upon receiving enoug XP to do so.
