Which non-core base classes? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I was just curious about what criteria are used to determined which new base classes were PC and which were NPC-only. I can understand some are hard to adjudicate, but Healer, Archivist, Wu-jen, SpellThief, etc are not that outlandish and don't require unheroic alignments. If it is because some are considered weak, is that really a good criteria? Can someone with authority look into the possibility of increasing the list of those available to PCs (I am looking specifically for Archivist here :))

Yes or no, I would like any insight you can provide on why some are acceptable and others are not. I can understand balance issues on the high end (Warlock) but on the low end (Healer)? Also, I think it should (for the same reason) be possible for players to take levels in the 4 NPC classes (Adept, Aristocrat, Expert, Warrior) if they choose. (big fan of the Adept/Druid combo)

Well, I can pretty much guarantee you that the four "Asian" base classes from the Complete books (wu jen, shugenja, ninja, samurai) were excluded, at least in part, due to flavor reasons (i.e., there's no particularly appropriate "place" for them on Oerth).

As far as Archivist...how much other material from Heroes of Horror is being introduced as Core? (I'm honestly not sure.)

None, I'm pretty sure.

IMO, you're not going to see archivist allowed. All the base classes come from the PHB and complete books. You can't take anything from HoH without campaign access. I've never seen an AR offer access to a new base class and I don't see that changing. (Plus it would be inefficient since you would have levels of some other class while hoping for archivist access). I won't even go into the problems with the class.

I'd like to create a healer PC, asked why it wasn't available during the discussion for last years draft, but never received a response.

Healer and Spellthief would be cool.
I don't see any way a Healer could be considered over-powered and it doesn't clash with the theme either that I can see -I'd like to know why they aren't allowed too.
