Why doesn’t the Living Greyhawk Campaign Sourcebook address these rules? A: The Living Greyhawk campaign uses the Dungeons & Dragons rules presented in the core rulebooks and some rules from a number of other rulebooks (such as the “Complete” series of books). While we will certainly address what rules are and are not allowed within the Living Greyhawk campaign, the campaign staff does not make rules decisions that would normally be handled by Wizards of the Coast. We do periodically submit potential rules issues that crop up in the campaign to the staff at Wizards for further review. Dispel Confusion, along with the Living Greyhawk Campaign Sourcebook, will provide you with answers to questions specific to the Living Greyhawk campaign, but not the Dungeons & Dragons game rules. Use the Knowledge Base customer service resource (found at www.wizards.com ) to ask your D&D-related questions. To which I suggest adding: "The answers they provide are authoritative for Living Greyhawk in the absence of a circle ruling." My read on the draft is that Customer Service (and the answers they provide) are authoritative for LG, especially appertaining to standard D&D. Some, however, have argued that the current wording only allows you to ask them, and says nothing about the authoritativeness of any answer provided. I believe the intent is to relieve the circle of constant adjudications of standard D&D rules, and to rely on an organization already formed for just that purpose - Wotc Customer Support. Especially as with each new book the rules possible contradictions and interactions grow more numerous, and yet are unrelated to the LG environment. So, I have three questions/comments. a). What is the intent of the current wording. b). Is it expected that the rulings published by WOTC customer service are authoritative in the absence of a higher precedence ruling? c). I suggest we add one line to the above paragraph. "The answers they provide are authoritative for Living Greyhawk in the absence of a circle ruling." I also suggest the following be added to page 62, just apove "Campaign Errata". "Rules decisions by Wotc Customer Service are authoritative for LG in the absence of circle ruling." Best Chris |

First, Customer Service replies are a private resource rather than a public resource. The usual means by which they are received is private email and a DM who encounters a dubious claim has no method to reliably verify it. Second, and more importantly, customer service answers are unreliable. A quick search on ENworld will reveal a number of important topics where multiple querries to WotC Customer service have resulted in opposite answers. If we need to resolve rules questions, we should stick to the published resource: the FAQ. It's not perfect and I have criticized it at times, but it is public, readily available, and mostly consistent. |
