Alright, My gaming buddies and I are planning on traveling to a convention this weekend to play in the Living Greyhawk Adventure "Baby Steps". The problem is, we have 2 Sorcerers (well A sorcerer and a Sorceress who happen to be Brother and sister, go figure) A Wizard and likely a cleric. Now this is our first time actually playing Living Greyhawk and from what I gather from other posts (on this board and in the yahoo groups) Living Greyhawk can be a very tough world at times, Especially at conventions and I would like to know if we stand a chance of surviving at APL 2 with a party of first level characters and a serious lack of Combat Tanks to fill the front ranks. Any tips for survival would also be greatly be appreciated!

I'd try to enlist at the convention one or two players with low level fighter type PC's that are willing to play APL2 with you guys.

If you have no luck recruiting fighter types, buy dogs. The big riding dog (150 gold pieces) makes a fine substitute for a fighter in most (but not all) situations. If you are poor, the little guard dogs, 25 gold each, are a little more fragile but work well also. If you are wealthy, put some barding on them to give them a better armor class.

As pointed out, try to get some low level characters to join you up in Con. Also, table of 1st level characters (and only 1st level characters) can 'enlist an iconic' which is essentially 25pts NPC. Just pick Krusk or Tordek if you want a front line fighter.

Enlisting the Iconic hasn't been a valid option since the changeover to 3.5 last year.

I don't want to give spoilers about the mod, so I'll just suggest that a Meat Shield® isn't absolutely necessary in this mod, especially if your casters choose the right spells and your cleric is competent in melee combat.

Thanks for the tips, The Adventure went well and we ended up finding a maximum weight, Maximum height half Orc with 20 STR to join our party. However his value quickly turned from meat shield to..well.. To avoid spoilers I’ll just say he became an amusement. Great Adventure, I highly recommend. Now that it is over, I feel a little better about public play, especially since my last adventure on World Wide Game day was a nasty TPK with a DM who actually said he believed it was his job to kill the players afterwards. All in All, I think my gaming group and I will be playing quite a bit more Living Greyhawk in the future.

I am glad to see that the "Killer DM" did not discourage you, it can be a very negative experience. Just remember that if you are ever at a table that it seems that everyone died because the judge was unfair, cruel, etc. You do have a place to go. Take it to the senior GM for the convention or gamesday, or take it to the regional triad. That kind of behavior is bad for all of us, and it can have far reaching effects that we sometimes don't realize.

Yours in Gaming,

Andrew T. :)
