| CdrcJsn08-15-07, 08:32 PM | I'm hoping that it means someone hacked on to the WotC site and is playing an elaborate practical joke. |
| control freak08-15-07, 08:39 PM | its probably none of the sort its probably DnD MINIS ONLINE! :P |
| Shandronas08-15-07, 09:44 PM | Isn't GenCon supposed to be the 'hottest 4 days in gaming' or something such like that? |
| Banor08-15-07, 09:59 PM | Isn't GenCon supposed to be the 'hottest 4 days in gaming' or something such like that? That be no reason why only DnD site is down and not Magic and stuff GenCon is also all that stuff. |
| Gyro_LC08-15-07, 10:28 PM | Take a look-see: http://forums.gleemax.com/forumdisplay.php?f=686 It's locked down now, but it's for 4th Edition. |
| Banor08-15-07, 10:40 PM | You know what great ? Greyhawk doesnt even have a forum of it own ! We are now an "Other campaign setting" ... |
| waytoomuchcoffee08-15-07, 10:49 PM | As long as they make Disguise Self a spell-like ability for Kobolds, I will be happy. And maybe the ability to speak with those little burrowing things. Whatever. Edit: Looks like they opened that forum up a little too early. It's closed now. It could be an elaborate hoax (there were a dozen threads or more started up by mods about 4e), but I doubt it. |
| Nuddawan08-15-07, 10:51 PM | They've gone and locked down those pages now...no sneaking a peak... |

| Banor08-15-07, 11:07 PM | From the D&D 4th Edition Forum Stickied Thread "Important Forum Notice" Hello All. The announcement of 4th Edition is a pretty big event for all RPG fans. It's a huge event for all of us at Wizards of the Coast, including WotC staff and our WizO support team. We understand that this is something many of you are going to feel very passionate about in a number of ways. We've created this forum for few reasons. We want everyone to have a single discussion forum where they can get answers and information directly from the D&D staff. We also want to prevent the other forums from being overwhelmed with 4E posts to the point that it drowns out any of the natural discussion in those areas. Additionally, I want to have a single forum where our community can post their hopes, fears, concerns, and dreams about 4E. This will make it easier for the D&D staff to read community feedback, and to (hopefully) provide a lot of answers to your questions. The WizOs will be moderating this forum and others. They are acting on the direction of Wizards of the Coast, so if you're upset with their moderation, please don't take it out on the WizOs. Their goals will be clear: Keep 4th Edition discussion in the 4E forum. This might mean locking threads and/or moving posts. If you have concerns, questions, or issues about the forum moderation taking place after the 4th Edition announcement, I've created a thread here where you may discuss your concerns. Finally, please try to be respectful in your posts and comments. Be nice to other posters, the WizOs, and WotC staff. The WizOs will be enforcing all Code of Conduct rules on all forums as usual. If you have any suggestions or ideas on how I can do a better job of helping to facilitate communication between the D&D Staff and the Community, I've created a thread here. Thanks! -Mike __________________ Mike Lescault Online Communities Manager Wizards of the Coast Host of Gamer Radio Zero Gamer_Zer0 is offline Report Post (Thanks to CO board for the Copy and paste :)) |
| Eric Anondson08-16-07, 12:47 AM | The good news (to me) I saw an Organized Play forum in the 4e forums. Okay, that's a small glimmer of good news. It means RPGA play will have a big role. We don't know the fate of LG yet. We can hope it isn't shut down. A reset of the setting might be interesting. If not a reset, a fast forward 10-15 years or so would maybe work even better. However, if 4e is transparent with 3.5 in the way 3.5 was with 3e, then maybe LG won't need a fast forward or a reset. It could continue along. A character rebuild would be necessary though. ;) In any case, it seems logical that 4e isn't coming for at least until next year's GenCon. Maybe longer. |
| Donald_Cannith08-16-07, 01:09 AM | I will hate it if it ends LG. I mean did they even bother tellign the RPGA cus I mean it looks like CGR is going to completely not work now. I was just getting really pumped about it. |
| Franco Un-American08-16-07, 02:30 AM | 4E? Huzzah! Best news I've heard all day. |
| Puggle Halfwine08-16-07, 02:52 AM | My predictions: - Eberron will be the default world. - 4th ed will closely follow the Star Wars: Saga Edition rules set. - 4th ed will not be available for at least a year. - Living Greyhawk will continue with the option for a character rebuild. - No information will be Open Gaming Content. (Shame...) |

While I would welcome the rebuild, I WOULDN'T welcome having to buy books all over again. (Now I'm getting why people hated the transition from 3.0 to 3.5) One can only hope that 4E is either three or four years off, or that it will be transparent with the current material. And let's get some love for the Hexblade in 4E, for heaven's sake they're weaker than PALADINS! |
| Eric Anondson08-16-07, 02:59 AM | My predictions: - Eberron will be the default world.IMO, Likely. - 4th ed will closely follow the Star Wars: Saga Edition rules set.IMO, not likely. Saga was entirely written by freelancers. WotC R&D wouldn't trust 4e to freelancers. I do believe 4e might take some of the freelancer's ideas and borrow them for 4e. "Closely follow" though I guess is in the eye of the beholder. - 4th ed will not be available for at least a year.Absolutely. - Living Greyhawk will continue with the option for a character rebuild.I don't even dare my own prediction about this. Though I know what I hope dearly. - No information will be Open Gaming Content. (Shame...)4e and the OGL and D20 license? There is already a forum in the [now closed] 4e forums for OGL/D20 gaming. Looks promising. |
| Gwumph08-16-07, 04:41 AM | I am expecting actually it to be several years off. I read those forums before they were shut down. So lets assume they are looking seriously at feedback. This might take a a year or so and then you have etc etc etc. Right now being printed is their Complete Rules compendium which is due to hit shelves in Oct. If they announce 4E will be out at gencon next year they have just dumped that book and all these most recent books because everyone will wait 1 year. now if they annouce a 3 year time frame people will buy these books since 3 years is a long time off. |

| Puggle Halfwine08-16-07, 06:24 AM | Already one of my predictions is wrong. :) Let's see how the others fare... |
| CSHunt6808-16-07, 10:02 AM | doubt full the ETA on 4th ed was like 2011 Guess again? ;) Seriously, there'd better be a simple conversion from the MASS of 3.5 material which has been pumped out - and IS STILL BEING pumped out. Use the digital initiative to produce conversion docs from 3.5 sourcebooks. |
| gomeztoo08-16-07, 10:28 AM | Already one of my predictions is wrong. :) Let's see how the others fare... I doubt Ebberron will be the default world. It is too specific. Most worlds don't have mechs, so I doubt they'll put that in the core books. I hope Greyhawk stays the default, as it is the most 'plain' world they have. |
| The_Jester08-16-07, 10:28 AM | Until I see something official I'm under the mindset this is one giant attention-grabbing scam to get everyone focused in on D&D. |
| gomeztoo08-16-07, 11:11 AM | Maybe they just needed more folk to attend Gencon... |
| CSHunt6808-16-07, 11:22 AM | Until I see something official I'm under the mindset this is one giant attention-grabbing scam to get everyone focused in on D&D. Looks reasonably official to me. Don't totally understand the skepticism, but okay. |
| The_Jester08-16-07, 11:29 AM | What have we seen that's official? A teaser page with no information and a bunch of people who claim to have been to the conveniently locked-down 4E forums. And ENWorld: http://www.enworld.org/ Which seems to be basing its coverage on this post: http://www.enworld.org/showthread.php?t=204147 And this website: http://theminiaturespage.com/news/519193/ Oh, and the ever reliable people who claim to have attended conferences or have inside information, you know, just like people have been claiming for the past three years. This has been cried wolf so many times I'm just frakkin' sick of even the idea of 4E.... |

| The_Jester08-16-07, 12:38 PM | It gets shouted around too much around convention season for me to really give a **** ***** *** *****. If/when I see something on the Wizard site I'll believe. Until then I'm skeptical but open-minded. But the trickling in information from so many sources is swaying me. But still not convinced it's not some brilliantly executed bait-n-switch (get everyone excited and paying attention to the MBs and main site while also collecting marketing research on what people expect and how many people care). |
| bhale18708-16-07, 12:55 PM | I started getting strong suspiscions of D&D 4.0 about a month ago when I heard WotC was announcing a new system at GenCon. Therefore, I started selling off my 3.5 books on an online auction site about 3 weeks ago starting with the ones I didn't use much anyway. After reading about all these places claiming WotC gave them press releases about D&D 4.0 I figured it was time to sell off my remaining books before the market falls out on them. Considering WotC's history of fence setting until the last second with information releases: I tend to beleive these posts about 4.0 are not a hoax, and WizO's are not announcing anything because they have not been authorized to do so yet. When Star Wars Saga edition got delayed the publishers notified book stores of the delay weeks before WizO's ever were able to confirm the delay on the boards. |

| Mystical_Tutor08-16-07, 05:54 PM | Considering WotC's history of fence setting until the last second with information releases: ... Ya, that is one of the facts of corporate life. There are very few other systems that D&D can be compared to but there are a couple facts that everyone that stops to think will realize. 1) The earlier you announce a replacement product the earlier people stop buying the present product [or even start selling it off]. What does that do to 3d and 4th Qtr profits? 2) How are writers going to provide meaningful access in COR8 +? The basic books have a release time frame but what can be included in COR8-01 for APL 12? 3) How much attention will anyone pay to access presently given to items available only in little known sources? I'm not buying a new book to get something that may not even exist next edition. The facinating question, in my mind, however is: What percentage of the mainstream D&D world will hold out by continuing to game in 3.5 (or like some I know that are still using AD&D) and will there be an attempt by some well meaning souls to go undergound with LG in 3.5 mode? How long could the present volunteer organization (or a repacement organization) keep LG afloat? |
| CSHunt6808-16-07, 08:53 PM | Well, despite the disbelief, it's a done deal. 4E is coming soon to a game-world near you. It's up to all of us to ensure LG's survival, in some form. |
| CSHunt6808-17-07, 05:29 PM | And, it looks like LG will survive. With all new PCs and rules. |
| Hariman08-17-07, 07:40 PM | And, it looks like LG will survive. With all new PCs and rules. Yeah. It sucks, and yet it doesn't. I'll never get the chance to finish my rogue wizard, Nevix Astari. But I will get the chance to restart him, hopefully correcting his prior flaws. Which might be easier in 4E, as multiclassing is supposed to be streamlined to prevent "Multiclass uselessness syndrome" (IE: No more "half wizard/half fighter all loser.) Who wants to bet that Kobold will be playable right out of the box in 4E? |

| Hariman08-17-07, 11:11 PM | I agree. It's good and bad. I fail to comprehend the wailing and gnashing of teeth, though, except as gut-level reactions. Because this is a forum and people want to vent? |
| Eric Anondson08-17-07, 11:14 PM | LG is gone from the information in the other threads.I'm pretty sure that "information" is nothing so much as secondhand notes from a seminar thrown through doomsday filters. |
| CSHunt6808-17-07, 11:15 PM | No, you missed the point. My point is - vent about what? As I said - it seems to be just gut-level reactions, at this point. In the cold light of day, people should probably wait until they see exactly what's going to happen. That may mean having a look at 4E once it's in play. To claim that not only are they quitting LG (which it seems is going to continue), they're quitting the RPGA, and they're quitting D&D. Sounds utterly reactionary - cutting off your nose to spite your face. I mean, you LIKED 3.5E, I guess. And you played LG. ... So, is there a CHANCE you might like 4E? ... Even if not, why would you STOP playing 3.5E? Or quit the RPGA? As I said, I think people should really probably wait to post. |
| DarkKnight08-17-07, 11:29 PM | There's a lot of speculation and rumors out there now. I think everyone needs to wait for the Circle to actually say what will happen. From other things I've read it sound like LG may have a year left in its current incarnation, which makes sense because the current regional story arcs were only supposed to go 3 years which would be the end of 2008. I really hope that LG continues as a Living Campaign and not one of those Xendrick styled campaigns. |
| CSHunt6808-17-07, 11:31 PM | Precisely. |

Vent about the system changing and having to learn new rules and forget old rules, gripe about the extra cost, and scream about spending several hundred hours getting a character to level 12 and getting told that they will have to retire the character next year. Right now, I'd like to know it the changeover will be at the end of next year or if the new year 8 mods will be 4E only while the year 7 mods stay 3.5. But that's just speculation and I should be waiting to find out what's really going to happen. |
| CSHunt6808-18-07, 01:09 PM | Vent about the system changing and having to learn new rules and forget old rules, gripe about the extra cost, and scream about spending several hundred hours getting a character to level 12 and getting told that they will have to retire the character next year. New rules are coming out all the time. Even if this is a bigger learning curve, did people really expect to continue to play LG 3.5 for the rest of their lives? This was going to happen _sometime_. Characters retire anyway. It's just being a different line in the sand. The conversion would have always caught people with characters spread across the level distribution. The money thing is easily dismissed, in any case. People either bought or didn't buy the newer books as they came out. If they didn't, and they're going to continue that practice, they only need buy the new PHB - a relatively small, one-time cost. If people _were_ buying the new books as they came out, they'll continue to spend at the roughly the same rate - just on 4E books, rather than 3.5E. These people spent to maintain the latest and greatest rulesets and variants, and nothing has changed. There's no need to increase your outlay, no need to subscribe to the online offerings. If you want to continue to play ftf, you can do so with merely a PHB. Right now, I'd like to know it the changeover will be at the end of next year or if the new year 8 mods will be 4E only while the year 7 mods stay 3.5. It's clear that there will be no interim product, I think. Year 8 will be 3.5E. Year 9 will be 4E. There will be no conversion. |

Actually, I thought I read somewhere that the books coming out between now and then will either be entirely fluff (and can therefore be converted to any edition) or will be 3.5 but have a web enhancement that will allow it to be converted to 4.0. Gonna have to look for the article now... |

Gonna have to look for the article now... like the conversion from 3.0 to 3.5??? no way, any book that doesn't have a 4dventure stamp on the front will be waste paper later or sooner - and i would bet on sooner. actually the 3.0 books would have been usable in 3.5 - with some work on the DMs side - but the campaign retired them quite soon - basically with the first two splat books for 3.5. ciao martin m. |
| Kelios_Lyonsmane08-18-07, 04:36 PM | My Biggest problem with 4th ed is the cost and lack of respect for players assuming that they will buy the new ed books ANYWAY. I played D&D ( The red , green and blue Box ) Played 2nd eddition witch was better than D&D then 3ed that was vastly superior ( Due to customization ) then 3.5 ( SAME RULES as 3e with a few tweeks ) and they keep vomiting at LEAST 1 new book a month . Now , i have about 50 books ( Core , and FR ) + a 5 year subscription to Dragon Magazine ,that was canceled btw , ( the Mag not the subsciption ) and they have been destroying 3.5ed for a while now , it fealt like Magic the gathering , you have the buy the latest Card set to be on lvl with the other players ,( I know D&D is not a competition ). Just look at the Prestige Classes like Mystic Thuerge Vs. Arcane hierophan , The 4 different Bladesigners , and a number of other Pr. Classes that basicly do the same thing only better not to mention the Hexblade , very cool classe but SO weak compared to say , the Duskblade , that when you think about it are the same classe but on 2 completely different power lvls ( like say Spiderman and Superman ) . All they would have to do is Create ONE book with the rebalanced Classes and rules ,BUT NO !!! That would mean not making as much money off players backs so why not a 4th edition ... |

All they would have to do is Create ONE book with the rebalanced Classes and rules ,BUT NO !!! That would mean not making as much money off players backs so why not a 4th edition ... Part of 4th Edition, from what I've read, is exactly that. An entirely new system with a new method of powers and abilities (Either "Per Day", "Per Encounter" or "At Will") with ALL classes working on the same power level. So no more "Fighters suck" or "Hexblade's Suck", all of the powers and abilities will be closer to each other, just with different applications. (Fighters get melee or ranged abilities, Clerics get healing and buffing spells, rogues get sneaky abilities.) The actual statement was along the lines of: The classes will be much closer to each other is direct combat with each other. Multiclassing is supposed to get a boost too. So no more "half wizard half fighter all loser" syndrome. The abilities that a character gets to choose will likely come from lists based on total character level instead of levels in individual classes. It sounds like you're getting exactly what you want, just via a method that you don't like. I can't say I like it too much either. It's gonna be another $100 to get the new core books, and more for choice supplements. But I was gonna keep buying books anyway, so I'll just buy different books now. |
