A couple of LG rules questions [Archive] - Wizards Community

I have some questions about silver and arcane spells.

Silver: I remember there used to be a silver dagger in the PHB, I don't remember which of the editions. Now - I can't find anything on silver anywhere. Is silver so rare that there are no longer silver weapons - leaving only the alchemical silver that is applied to weapons?

Arcane Spells: page 10 of the LGCS talks about learning new Arcane Spells. Do spells gained through a level need a specific source as long as they're from the PHB? DO spells gained after an adventure need a specific source as long as they're from the PHB? Or is it only non-PHB spells that need a source?

TUs and Spells: With spells learned after an adventure - does it take additional time units to attempt to learn new spells? ( I cannot determine if "Learning these spells does not cost any additional time units" applies to level-learned spells, adventure-learned spells, or both)

arcane spells and treasure: If the source of spell for spells after an adventure is a scroll obtained in that adventure, does learning the spell destroy the original scroll and thereby reduce that character's share of treasure? The entire group's treasure?

Thanks,
Clayton

I'll answer the silver question:

Alchemical silver weapons are under 'Special Materials'. Try this link: http://www.wizards.com/d20/files/v35/SpecialMaterials.rtf

Alchemical Silver does not require special access from PC. Weapon made from this material suffers -1 damage roll.

Ammunition +2 gp

Light weapon +20 gp

One-handed weapon, or one head of a double weapon +90 gp

Two-handed weapon, or both heads of a double weapon +180 gp

I'll not answer spell questions since I don't play mage and aren't an expert on this matter:D

Spells gained free at each level do not need a source, you just select them from the PHB.

Spells gained in any other way need a source, ie another PC wiz, scroll or captured spellbook. I tend to make a note of where the spells came from on the back of my AR.

TUs and Spells: With spells learned after an adventure - does it take additional time units to attempt to learn new spells? ( I cannot determine if "Learning these spells does not cost any additional time units" applies to level-learned spells, adventure-learned spells, or both)

You may add a number of spells equal to your caster level to your spellbook at the end of the scenario for no time cost provided you have access. LGCS p10.

arcane spells and treasure: If the source of spell for spells after an adventure is a scroll obtained in that adventure, does learning the spell destroy the original scroll and thereby reduce that character's share of treasure? The entire group's treasure?[/B]

You can do it one of two ways;

a) either purchase the scroll at the end of the scenario from your own treasure and use the scroll to add the spell to your spellbook, or

b) use the scroll in game which would destroy that scroll removing it from the overall treasure gained for everyone. Often the total treasure gained is greater than the treasure cap for your APL so this may be irrelevant.

Hope that helped

Steve: that helped. Let me make sure I have it...

Taco the 1st level Evoker finishes a core or regional adventure. Part of the loot is a scroll of Burning Hands, and the rest of the party is ok with him using that to add to his spellbook (I subtract the scroll from the magic item portion of the loot and recalculate gp earned for the party - unless he fails check#2, in which case the scroll is not destroyed).

1) He casts read magic (if it is not memorized, do I assume that he has time after the module to rest and get the spell to use - or - does he make the DC 21 Spellcraft check?)

2)Taco studies the spell to learn it Spellcraft DC 14 (no TUs used, DC15 +1 for level - 2 for school specialization)

3)Succeeding both step 1 and 2, Taco pays 100gp materials cost to write the spell into his spellbook and makes a note of how many pages he has remaining in his spellbook. The materials cost is subtracted out near "other coin spent" in lifestyle box - or - is cost subtracted from "items bought"?

Thanks again!

Most DMs I know would allow you to presume you cast the read magic the day after the scenario with no TU cost but it's best to check before assuming.

I always put the costs for adding a spell to the spellbook in items bought so I have room to explain what the cost is for, then again I write most costs in there that are not standard lifestyle. It seems simpler to explain that way to me :)
