So, we have a somewhat local Con coming up, and there will be an interactive at it. As part of an effort to spark interest in my city, I'm trying to get a group of people to go out to the Con to experience a weekend full of gaming. The group has some people, myself included, who have "cross gender" characters (ie-guys playing female characters, girls playing male characters), and I'm wondering how this is typically handled in an interactive setting.

Also, none of the people that will likely be attending have ever LARPed before, so we have literally zero experience with any sort of interactive roleplaying. How are situations with skills, and combat situations resolved in an interactive?

It's possible that we may just skip that slot altogether, but it might be good to get some of them (and me) out of their/our shells, so if it's not too odd and uncomfortable, I'll likely encourage participation.

Well, is it described as a "battle interactive", an "access interactive", a "social interactive"...? You might want to read the mod description in more detail - the only situation where there would be LARPing would be the dreaded, doom-filled Social Interactives.

Probably.

I've only been to a few LG interactives, but they generally weren't full-on LARPs, and the only costumes I can recall seeing were done by NPCs/DMs.

Any skill or combat resolution gets resolved with dice, the same as in a standard LG game, IME.

As taylorj notes, unless it's billed as a "social interactive", I don't think your "cross-gender" players / PCs should have any issues.

Just wear a character-gender-appropriate hat and a nametag.

A local con came up with a useful way of addressing this problem; they printed their name badge either pink or blue depending on the character's gender (I think there were even a few grey ones for the "unusual" character). It allowed us to easily determine what gender the character was at a glance. Very useful.

some venues, quite sensibly, ban weapons including replica's :)

Most interactives I have been to have had no Larp component at all. Even the most larpiest one I have seen could still be enjoyed perfectly fine by the kind of players who are all dice and no talk. You will be fine.
