I see this as a potentual problem and hope someone knows the answer.

Joe Somebody the GM is running a home game and has 3 level 8 characters and 2 level 9 characters. A sixth person wants to join in the game but has never played a RPGA event. Do I...

A- Start the guy at level one? That sounds a little harsh and I think the level one guy will die real soon.

B- Make a character at level 8 (or somewhere around there) and start his little campain from there? Here the new guy has no paperwork just in case he wants to go to a tournament later. Sure it will be ok if he stays in my game but I am trying to cover all bases.

C- Something else I over looked. :-)

Thanks for any input you may have.

Well, if it's an RPGA Living Greyhawk campain or he some day wants to play in the world of Living Greyhawk, then he'd have to start at level 1, he doens't get a choice in that matter.

If it's a home game only character I'd start him at either 7 or 8. Probably 8, so he's at least with the party and can help out and have fun. Though some times it can be fun to play the low level cleric that helps out in the high APL party.

You must start him at level 1. No if's or buts. Living Greyhawk does not have level kicks. Option B is violation of RPGA rules.

That is what I thought. OK he is Level one. Now this does bring another problem.

Say he survives the games. (I have no idea on how there.) I know there is some type of rule stating you do not get full xp if you are above or below 3 levels of the average party
(For the example above the AP is 8 or 10 and he is level 1)

What would the XP be for the level one character. (1/2 xp? 1/10 xp?)

He will get 1/2 experience and 1/2 gold.
P.S. When created, he starts with maximum gold to purchase items. There is a Living Greyhawk Campaign Sourcebook with additional information available at the various regional websites. Please download and read this document for everything you need to know to run an LG game. It's 74 pages of information.

You appear to live in Georgia which is the Gran March region. Their web site is at: http://granmarch.living-greyhawk.com/

Something you have to remember, He can't play in a round where he is 3 levels above or below the maximum or minimum level for that round.

IE....

If the round is apl 6 to 12 and the party is playing it at apl 10, that's fine, but no character level 3 or lower, or 15 or higher can play. So unless the round's minimum ALP is 2 he won't be able to join in.

At least that is how I understand it someone correct me if I am wrong.

I am sorry, my last post was incorrect, it is 4 levels, not 3 and only applies to higher...not lower.

You're still incorrect (assuming it didn't change in LGCS 4.2).

If a PC is four or more levels above the maximum APL supported by a module, he is ineligible to play in that module. This restriction doesn't apply to modules that support APL 12. The APL the party is playing the module is also immaterial.

Ed (Whose secondary is getting lots of play because of this rule).

The situation you describe, the right thing to do is for the existing players to use their alternate lowbie character (or create new ones).

No level 1 should have to play at APL8 just to get into a game.
