not really, no. other than the phb ones, without taking the feat, the best you can hope for are AR based familiars, like a monkey.

Or a parrot! For a Dread Pirate, you can't beat a parrot.

I only have seen a monkey access once, in a now-retired module that has a Reasonable Voice

I have seen access to a Brixashulty as an animal companion too.

But that's all I've seen.

I wonder if I can get a pig... or do i need to be a orge paladin to do that..

What about some sort of arboreal one-eyed rodent? That'd be cool, right? Right?

blink dogs and pseudo dragons .. can't beat em

be very careful if you do eventually take improved familiar .. only non-evil familiars off the very first table in the DMG are LG legal .. sorry no fire elementals or magma mephits

You might want to check on which ones are available.. quite a few of the new books reprinted the Improved Familiar feat (each time adding more options)... You might need to get a special mission for access to one of the many many many choices...

Yeah, I'd love to have a chipmunk companion.

Yep. That's the only arboreal rodent I can think of... :D

I've seen access to tiny monstrous spiders for a familiar.

How do you get one? That's easy. Just play AD&D.
