I was glad to see Jason Bulmahn's remarks in his Paperwork article. Luckily, I have been practicing the very paperwork discipline he suggested in the article. But, it can be challenging with some players.

I hope players understand that the paperwork shuffle is meant to keep the game fair and give it continuity. Players also have an interesting history, if they manage their ARs well. With this in mind, I also hope that players understand why a GM asks for a previous AR, and perhaps a player's Character Record Sheet. When a GM asks for these items, it does not mean he or she thinks a particular player is cheating. It just means the GM is doing his or her job by trying to make the game fair for all.

During a recent game of Folly, a player refused to allow a GM to review his Character Record Sheet. He thought we were accusing him of cheating, and he refused to play the scenario - much to his loss. It was not a witch-hunt for away-from-the-table cheaters. Those who have played Folly know why a good Character "audit" should be conducted. That player ended up detracting from the fun of the group, and missed a great adventure.

So, players, just be patient, please. The paperwork shuffle is a game tool to ensure fairness and accountability. Sure, it helps to keep the rare, unscrupulous player honest, but that is not the sole intent. The paperwork manifests the chance for players to say, "Hey, look at these. My character did that!." Any player should be proud to be able to point to his favorites character's documented accomlishments.

Hey there all,

I can't agree with Greyson enough here. What we try to stress is that this paperwork is a record of your characters deeds, a history book of what the character has been through. In the end, we looked very closely at the old systems when designing the current one and determined that it really did not take much more time and made things a lot more clear (I am sure some here remember having to keep track of your total character value and what a pain that was).

Thanks for the comments.
