I am a 2nd level dwarf fighter and I am pretty new to D&D. Can i purchase and animal companion such as a dog and have it trained. Do I need a certain level of handle animal to do so. Any help would be great.

Well, the term "animal companion" specifically refers to a class feature of Druids and Rangers, so you cannot get an animal companion in that sense...

However, Riding dogs and guard dogs are both purchaseable out of the PHB. Riding dogs in particular are good fighters at low levels.

However, you will need at least one rank in handle animal to get them to attack what you want, and unless you're a druid/ranger commanding your animal companion, it is a move action to command an animal to do something (however, animals with the attack, defend, or guard trick will attack back if they are attacked)...

How do I train the dog in war.

Unless you are a druid or ranger it is easier to just buy a war-trained animal then there is no need to train the beast yourself (something fighters rarely are good at).
